Collie and sheltie lovers will go to extremes to preserve the glorious coats of their dogs. Even in rescue where we see some nasty-looking fur coats full of mats and debris, we use all kinds of grooming tricks to avoid the last resort…….shaving down a collie or sheltie. When this sweet collie dog was found running as a stray, he had all of the typical disgusting abandoned dog “poor hygiene” issues. Plus one….fleas! Yuck! The shelter felt it was in his best interests to buzz him down. Although he is not looking his best, his sweet soul is shining through. His new name is “Louie.” And he is quite a charmer. We guess Louie to be 4-5 years old. Because he was slightly anemic, we put off his neuter for a week. He is heartworm negative and has had all of his vaccines including the one for leptospirosis which is on the rise in Colorado. Louie is neutered and has been microchipped with a Home Again chip. His foster mom has worked hard with him to understand the concept of housebreaking. Louie had obviously been an outdoor only dog. He absolutely hated a crate so that would not work. He jumped over a baby gate in front of a bathroom in a heartbeat. That would not work either. Running in and out the doggie door with the other dogs seems to have done the trick. He goes outside and goes potty and then comes back in. Hurray!! This big old pooch is crazy about children, other dogs and all adults he has met so far. He has a quiet manner about him and he expresses himself with his eyes and his paws. Louie will sit directly in front of you and offer his paw. If you are sitting as well, he will put his paw on your knee and gaze directly into your eyes with big question marks in his. “Who are you? Will you be my forever person? What time did you say dinner was served?” We hope to be able to answer all of his questions soon.
