Sky is a 3y 12lb tan and white Chihuahua Dachsund mix dog who arrived as a stray. Sky needs a one person home only with no visitors as he is unpredictable w/ strangers.
Upon intake Sky was quiet and very still for introduction with a tense body. Sky was also very still for handling and counselor was able to scan for microchip (negative) collar and photograph. Sky walked well on leash and was responsive to guidance. Sky appeared cautious to petting and counselor did not make contact as Sky appeared fearful to approach of hand with tucked tail and tensing body.
Sky is great once he knows you, best in a home w/ 1-2 people w/ no children. Good w/ dogs and cats:)
SAFER: NEW HOPE ONLY past behaviors in a home are unknown. Sky was calm and fearful but allowed all handling. During SAFER Sky came into the assessment room fearful with tense body posture he was a bit social towards the assessor. Not all handling items were able to be conducted as Sky attempted to bite the assessor, on the the first paw squeeze. He displayed no interest in any of the resource items during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue that can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
