My name is Lia. I'm a young chihuahua (only a year old) and I weigh 10 lb. One day my previous owner dropped me off at Chicago Animal Care and Control, and the very next day I found myself living with a foster family. Thank you Adopt-A-Pet!

Among my favorite things are cuddling up next to my foster mom, getting ear and belly rubs, and chewing on stuffed toys and my nylabone. I also like to chase after my toys and play tug-o-war. My foster mom thinks I'm super smart: for example, if I want a particular toy, I'll go looking for it - no other will do. I'm fascinated by bugs and butterflies. And I'm super energetic and fun to play with. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE running around with other small, playful dogs. I'm also very agile and like to jump over things making me a great candidate for agility training. If you're athletic, we'd make a great team. Typical of my breed, I'm a burrower: give me a blanket and I'll find my way under it and take a little nap.

I respond well to "No" or other disapproving sound and I do just fine in my crate. And while I like to be near my humans, I can do my own thing if they are busy. Since coming to my foster home I have made great progress on house training. So, if you can provide me with love, exercise and a little discipline (Cesar Millan says all canines need discipline), it won't be long before I become your best friend and loyal companion. And if you have another small doggy at home that likes to play, I think we'd all be very happy.

My adoption fee is $300 and it includes: vet exam, heartworm test (neg.), rabies, distemper and bordetella vaccinations, routine deworming, flea control, heartworm prevention, microchip and spay.

About Adopt-A-Pet, Inc.

About Our Shelter...

ADOPT-A-PET is an all-volunteer non-profit animal shelter/adoption agency dedicated to saving the lives of lost, abandoned or otherwise homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens and placing them into permanent, loving homes.

ADOPT-A-PET provides a safe refuge and a second chance for unclaimed animals from various municipal pounds and, space permitting, accepts other homeless, neglected or injured animals from their rescuers.

ADOPT-A-PET was founded in 1981, and has since saved the lives of over 15,000 animals. All animals at Adopt-A-Pet are found permanent loving homes. Animals remain with us for as long as it takes to find them a suitable permanent new home.

ADOPT-A-PET does not own a shelter facility. All of our animals are boarded at co-operating animal hospitals or in volunteer foster homes until they are adopted by their new families.

ADOPT-A-PET provides all necessary medical care for every animal. All animals are health-checked, vaccinated, treated for medical problems and spayed/neutered.

ADOPT-A-PET is available for educational speaking engagements to schools and community groups in Chicago or the suburbs to promote proper pet care, compassion for animals, and the importance of spaying and neutering.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Adopt-A-Pet does not own a shelter facility. Because all of our animals are in private foster homes, they are shown by appointment only, after an application has been submitted.

Occasional public weekend adoption events are posted on the Home Page of our website: www.adoptapet-il.org

Our Adoption Process...

Our adoption process: Adopt-A-Pet does not own a shelter facility. Because all of our animals are in private foster homes, they are shown by appointment, after an application has been submitted.

How to start the process: Contact us by email or phone. An adoption counselor will return your message within 1-2 days. You will be asked to fill out an application that will ask for personal information about your family, your home and about the kind of pet you're looking for. Vet references, personal references and landlord information (if applicable) is required. You can also download an application from our website. Once you return the application, an adoption counselor will call you back for a more thorough interview, again within 1-2 days. Sometimes it may take a little longer as we're all volunteers and sometimes it gets very busy. Assuming the pet you're interested in appears to be a match for you, a meeting will then be set up. For some animals, a home check may be required. If an adoption takes place, you will be asked to sign a contract and pay an adoption fee. Each animal's individual adoption fee is posted in its description on our websites.
