Girly Girl is a gorgeous jet-black, smart, two year old Doodle (Poodle/Doberman mix) who has had a very sad start to her life. She is looking for a home where she can learn how good a dog’s life can be. She was part of a hoarding situation, and spent the first 4 months of her puppy-hood confined to a basement and fed just once daily, along with several litter-mates and other Doodles. Once alerted, authorities confiscated the dogs and their owner was charged with animal neglect. Girly Girl and her litter-mates then spent the next 18 months in a kennel until their court case was settled in April, when the dogs were surrendered and became available for adoption.
All of the Doodles have found forever homes, except for Girly Girl. She does not present herself well in a kennel situation, as she is afraid of some dogs and barks, so she has been passed over time and time again. In a home environment she is more relaxed and has nice house manners. Once she feels safe, she is quite mellow. She needs a committed, patient owner to help her continue her basic obedience training, to help her feel safe, and to give her lots of attention. She pulls on a leash but she really wants to please her person and will listen. She gets along well with her litter-mates, but is fearful of other dogs. Another dog for company may help her gain confidence, and a meeting with a potential adopter’s dog will be required. She will do best in a home with a fenced yard and children over 14.
Girly Girl spent a recent weekend with one of her brothers and had such a good time! She was such a good girl in the house and showed that she is a true cuddle bug. Girly Girl is intelligent and beautiful. All she needs is guidance and a chance to become the best dog she can be. An experienced dog owner who can help Girly leave her sad past behind and reach her potential is going to have a treasure of a companion dog!

Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey,shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) are listed almost four times as long.
