My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Maurice : 1 yr old male, white-mitted, Black and Silver Maine Coon mix

So, we all know life gives out some hard knocks. I think this was what happened to young Maurice. Life gave him a very hard knock, literally. Was he hit by something? A car? Did he fall? Was he struck somehow? Something ruptured his left eardrum. The vet says his eardrum should normally heal by itself, but right now he has no hearing in that ear. His left eye is sometimes not fully open though nothing seems to be wrong with it. His head tilts left most of the time (which is very cute). Sometimes, he seems a little uncoordinated. None of this bothers him or holds him back at all. In the two months we have had him, his head tilt has lessened a lot and we can see he is better. It is frustrating not to know his history, but I think it is clear he is a healthy, young kitty who is recovering from an injury.

He was brought in “stray” to a shelter and some shelter workers loved him, so they named him Maurice and searched for a rescue to take him in. He seems a bit vulnerable and he is still really a little baby boy. I think they wanted him safe and I was happy to take him into foster. He arrived very scared and unsettled. Now, he has gotten used to us and has relaxed in our company. Maurice has a long, slender body that will fill out as he grows up. Maine Coons keep growing into their third year so this young one has a long way to go. His fur is magnificent but he has not lived long enough for it to become the lush thick coat you can tell he will have. He’s a teenager and still in his awkward stages. Of course, he is a beauty with his rusty “nose leather” and his green eyes and dramatic silver and black markings. He is white-mitted (which means he has white feet) and has a white muzzle and bib to match. Maurice will grow into a sumptuous big Coon boy. Right now, he is a bit bedraggled with his coat still growing in, his super long legs, and his muscles forming.

This boy loves other cats. He plays with everyone and just wants to have fun. I don’t know about dogs. He is shyer with humans and a loud noise can spook him. He likes gentle petting from someone he knows. Maurice is just learning how to be in life, how to behave. His sweetness shows. As he recovers from his accident, he is all into play and goofiness.. Yet there is also a hint of sadness or loneliness about him. He has had a hard beginning.

This boy needs a quiet family who will be happy to let him grow up with them. He will grow in stature, in confidence, in coat and weight, perhaps his hearing will improve, perhaps his head will straighten (though I sort of hope not all the way). It is hard to predict the ways he will recover from whatever has hurt him. His new family needs to want to protect and nurture him as he grows. And they need to accept that he may never have all his hearing or no head tilt or a left eye that doesn’t partly close sometimes and so forth. He is a hard luck boy who needs love and safety and cuddles and the guidance of parents. What fun to watch him grow. He is a darling.

He eats wet and dry food and is litterbox perfect.

His foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.
