My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

SAMSON
1 To 3-Year-Old Male, Golden and White Persian

July update: Look at Samson now !!. He has been growing fur at a great rate. He now looks like a little, fuzzy, white lamb. He is doing great. He likes cats and is full of fun and play. Yes, he is still talkative. If anything, he is more friendly than ever -- he loves humans and the attention they give him. He shows his pleasure by looking you right in the eye and licking your arm. And then telling you all about it. He is the only cat I have ever met who has bushy eyebrows. He is a funny boy. He still needs his face washed each day. He is a great cat.

Update 6/17/16: Next day update: Here are some walking and standing photo’s of this boy. If his mouth is open it is because he is talking to me. You can see that a great deal of his long fur especially on his back is missing from shaving and dematting. This is true of his poor tail also. You can also see what a strong solid body he has. He is all muscle. Samson is not a couch potato kind of Persian. He is a confident man about town kind of Persian. On his way to the gym to lift weights in preparation for his triathlon.

Original post: What could possibly be the story of this little Persian? A woman who was moving wanted to trap and take the feral cat she had fed for five years with her to her new home. Instead of catching that cat, she caught Samson. "He is a Persian!!" she thought. "He does not belong outside." She kept him in the trap and called us.

Samson, as he was soon named, was a bit upset and unsettled at first, but not for long. He showed his first foster mom he loved to eat. He also loved attention. He also was filthy. He also wasn’t neutered and smelled to high heaven of male cat. He also was covered with foxtails sticking out of his skin. Yikes.

The very next day he was neutered and combo tested (both negative), vaccinated and microchipped. While he was under anesthesia the good vet combed him out, shaved him a bit, and removed a remarkable number of foxtails.

He was transferred to me two days later. A little apprehensive about what we were getting, we discovered he was absolutely wonderful. We found more foxtails totally embedded under his skin working their way inward, as they do. They spiral into the body and can kill. Off he went to our local vet. Eight foxtails later he was free of them.

So here was a friendly, affectionate, healthy, unneutered Persian who clearly had been living outside for a while, perhaps eating the food put out for this woman’s feral kitty. He is not thin. Was he a breeder’s stud that escaped? It is unlikely he lived his whole life outside -- he wasn't that dirty. We will never know but it is an unusual story.

Because he wasn't neutered, he has big jowls on his cheeks and has unusually big muscles. This gives him a wonderful look. Unlike any Persian I have met, he is super talkative. He looks you in the eye and talks to you. He is a pleasant and gentle cat, and amazingly good-natured. When the mood strikes, he can be demanding as he tells you what he wants. What a busy few days he had at the start with us and he took it all in stride. We all fell very hard for him and fought over what to call him. I rejected Biscuit and Carlyle and Churchill in favor of Samson who was a hero known for his brawn.

Once we bathed him, we could see that he was not all white. He has a golden fawn color on his face with a white muzzle. Very nice. The rest of him is white. His long fur was mostly combed out to remove the mats. His body looks pretty disreputable right now and his foxtail scabs are still visible. All this will fade away. The hair on his tail is very long and I expect he will be quite the handsome boy when his coat grows in.

Samson is such a one-of-a-kind guy. He is a great deal of fun. A macho Persian with a golden face, if you can imagine that. Someone will have such a good time with this character.

We haven't had him long and I will know more soon and get better photos for you. I think he is cat friendly and I expect he could easily let a gentle dog know his place in the scheme of things. I am not sure, but he may need a family who will carefully keep him inside. He may want out and he is a determined fellow. This may be how he got out in the first place. A catio might be good for him. He is really a special guy, a darling.

He eats wet and dry food and is litter box perfect.

Samson’s foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.
