About Ozark-Dale County Humane Society

About Our Shelter...

The Ozark-Dale County Humane Society Shelter was established in October of 2004 by a small group of volunteers. The main goal of the shelter was to rescue pets from a local municipal facility that euthanized all animals after seven days using a gas chamber. Fortunately, the gas chamber was removed in 2007. However, the facility still puts a seven day death sentence on all animals and then they are euthanized by lethal injection.

Check out our most recent rescue froma kill facility. Her name is Izzy. We found her and her first newborn at the pound. She had givin birth on the cold and wet concrete floor. We took Izzy and the baby back to our shelter where they were dried off and warmed up. Izzy was given a warm, dry and private place to whelp eight more puppies. Izzy and her little family are doing just fine now.

We are a non-profit organization and depend solely on donations. All proceeds are used for the health and welfare of our animals.

We have attempted on several occasions to obtain grants. We were turned down because our county is 300 people short of the required population count. We were also turned down because we have not been open long enough to provide five years of financial records. And last but not least, we were turned down because we spay and neuter PRIOR to the animal being adopted. That qualifies as a "DUH!" moment because the State of Alabama requires that all age eligible animals be spayed/neutered prior to leaving the shelter.

One of our goals for the future is to reduce the number of unwanted puppies by offering a subsidized spay and neuter program for those pet owners unable to afford the cost of surgery.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our shelter is located on Bivins Road in Ozark, Alabama. Coming from Dothan, take hwy 231 North until you see signs for the rest area. Just past the rest area, turn right on to County Road 30. Go up to the top of the hill. The first paved road to the left is Bivins. Turn left on Bivins. We are around the curve on the right side of the road.

Due to a shortage of volunteers, the shelter is only open to the public from 8 - 12 in the morning every day of the week. Viewing pets after hours can be made by appointment.

We always need volunteers! We desperately need volunteers to help socialize traumatized pets and to leash train our "wild horses." All of the animals need someone to walk, pet and play with them. We also have a fenced in exercise area where you can let them off the leash to play fetch. We need volunteers to sit in the cattery (we have a small one) and let the cats sit in your lap or play with them.

Our Adoption Process...

We require an adoption application, vet reference and a home visit. Unless otherwise stated, adoption fees are $125.00 for dogs and $75.00 for cats.

All age eligible pets must be spayed or neutered prior to completion of the adoption process. If the pet is too young for surgery, you will be provided with a Certificate of Spay/Neuter. We will reimburse surgery fees up to the maximum about of the adoption fee.

Our animals are tested for heartworms or feline leukemia. They receive vaccinations and are wormed.
