Meet Dirk! This gorgeous Great Pyrenees boy was born approximately August 1, 2013.
Dirk is a sweet soul who had a bit of a rough start in life - he has lost one hind leg. Dirk does not want you to feel sorry for him. He wants and needs a family who will treat him like a normal dog and provide him with a secure, stable life. Above all, he wants to be loved and be accepted and feel secure.
Due to his past and his physical infirmities, Dirk will do best with humans who are experienced dog owners with knowledge of dog behavior and body language. He is not be suitable for a family with children with lots of activities and goings-on, because while Dirk can get around reasonably well on 3 legs, he is not nearly as physically strong or robust as his size might suggest. He also has high prey drive and thus cannot be in a home with cats or other small critter pets.
Dirk is friendly to humans and is pretty responsive to basic commands (come, sit, down, crate, go) for a Pyr. He loves to be brushed: he is equally ok with a comb, undercoat rake, pin brush and slicker brush. Also, since he’s missing his hind leg, he particularly appreciates it when you give him nice scratches on the whole right side of his body a few times a day He is sensitive around his hip and tail area, so grooming around those areas should be done slowly and gently while taking cues from him, as he will let you know.
Dirk can get along with other dogs, but they must be of a particular temperament. Dirk had little to no socialization growing up and spent a significant amount of his early life at the end of a chain. As a result, what he looks for in a canine companion is a male or female dog who is confident, laid back, nonreactive, and can anchor him and provide him with a sense of security.
Dirk is not one for a novice dog owner. But if you are an experienced dog owner looking for a special soul to share your life with, please consider giving Dirk a chance at a love filled home that he deserves.
Dirk is available for adoption in the Dallas/Fort Worth area only.
