Meet Dirk. Born approximately August 1, 2013. Dirk is a tripod sweet soul who has had a bit of a rough start in life. He above all wants to be loved and be accepted and feel secure. Dirk does not want you to feel sorry for him. He wants and needs a family who will treat him like a normal dog and provide him with a secure, stable life. Due to his past and his physical infirmities, Dirk would do best with humans who are experienced dog owners with knowledge of dog behavior and body language. He would not be suitable for a family with children with lots of activities and going ons because while Dirk can get around reasonably well on 3 legs, he is not nearly as physically strong or robust as his size might suggest. He also has high prey drive and thus cannot be in a home with cats or other small critter pets.
Dirk is friendly to humans and is pretty responsive to basic commands (come, sit, down, crate, go) for a pyr. He loves to be brushed (he is equally ok with a comb, undercoat rake, pin brush and slicker brush). Also, since he’s missing the right rear leg, he particularly appreciates it if you would give him nice scratches on the whole right side of his body a few times a day :-) He is sensitive around his hip and tail area so grooming around those areas should be done slowly and gently and taking cues from him as he will let you know.
Dirk can get along with other dogs, but they must be of a particular temperament. Dirk had little to no socialization growing up and spent a significant amount of his early life at the end of a chain. As a result, what he looks for in a canine companion is a dog who is confident, laid back, and nonreactive that can anchor him and provide him with a sense of security. His canine companion can be either male or female, so long as he/she has the right type of personality for Dirk.
Dirk is not one for a novice dog owner. But if you are an experienced dog owner looking for a special soul to share your life with, please consider giving Dirk a chance at a love filled home that he deserves. Dirk is available for local adoption only.
Spin Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Potential adopters are asked to make travel arrangements if they live elsewhere. All SPIN dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. Please go to our website www.SpinRescue.org and fill out an application for this great Great Pyrenees!
