Oreo - $50 Adoption Fee!

LOVES TO WINDOW WATCH! Very athletic-catches mice and birds - he would probably do well outside on a harness. Likes to be by you but is not a clingy cat - allows you to do your stuff too!

Hi I'm Oreo! I wanted to swing by and introduce myself to everyone with the hope that a sweet human will give me a second glance! I'm not very happy here in a cage surrounded by unfamiliar faces and noises-I hope someone can help me!

New Video with my friend Jamie!

I kinda have a colorful past- I first arrived at the shelter in 2015 as a stray kitty that nobody claimed! I was roaming the mean streets of Detroit Lakes when the law caught up with me. Eventually I was adopted by a wonderful person but her home proved to be a bit much for me and I had to come back. See I'm kinda like an awkward child with my social skills- probably because I didn't grow up with a mom or siblings to teach me appropriate play techniques. Sometimes I meet a new kitty who I want to be friends with and we start to hit it off but then I get insecure and decide I need to be the boss of my new friend. Pretty soon my new friend decides I'm too bossy and gives me the paw, which gets my tuxedo undies in a bunch and I feel I have to retaliate. I don't mean to be a bully! I just don't know any other way.

I can get overstimulated easily with petting but I will get up and walk away when I need a break. There are also times when I see your hand or arm and think it's a toy but all of this can be worked on in a calm home with appropriate wand toys and stuff. The ladies at the shelter promise to share all secrets! Sometimes I roll over and show you my tummy...I have lots of good sides too!

I guess I better tell you what my dream home would look like! I would be super duper happy if I could be the only pet and if you didn't have any small children. I kinda have the same bossy issues with them- they make me insecure sometimes with how fast they move! I really am a good boy...I just have some quirks. Doesn't everybody?

I am available for adoption at The Marshmallow Foundation in Detroit Lakes, MN. I am a neutered male, shorthaired tuxedo babe, always dressed to impress!
I am 2 years old and LOVE a cat perch next to a window! Please don't let me be forgotten! Thank you!!!

About The Marshmallow Foundation

About Our Shelter...

The Marshmallow Foundation is a non-profit shelter that was set up in honor of ‘Cocoa’ and her ‘Eleven Marshmallows’, a Labrador mom who had been abandoned and locked in a house for 3 weeks. Rescued by an Iowan Sheriff and obviously pregnant, she was taken to a local veterinarian. After receiving her donated care and through the generosity and compassion of many, Cocoa came to rest in Minnesota at the Livingston-Wiedewitsch home and went on to whelp an astonishing eleven puppies. All were adopted into loving homes; however more need our help. The ultimate goal, of course, is to end this nightmare of unwanted companion animals, which can only be accomplished through heightened public awareness and active promotion of a spay/neuter program.

The Marshmallow Foundation is located in Detroit Lakes, MN and serves as pound for the cities of Audubon, Callaway, Detroit Lakes, Frazee, Lake Park, Mahnomen and Wauban, as well as Becker County.

First and Foremost, we are a “low kill” shelter. This is very important to all of us and we believe in it with all of our hearts. The animals that are brought to us as “strays” are held for five (5) business days. After that hold period is up, we have the right to have that animal euthanized. This is how most pounds/shelters operate because they have little resources to care for these animals. We wanted to give area animals more of a chance at finding new homes, therefore we only euthanize if there are extenuating circumstances. We have so many wonderful stories that we can share of animals surviving and going on to loving homes because our shelter and our supporters gave that animal another chance at life. Because we are committed to caring for these animals until we can find them appropriate homes, many are with us for a very lengthy period. We do not give them time limits. But to give them such extended care requires support from our public. On average, we have around 70 cats and 20 dogs to care for while they wait to find new homes and families.

In addition to finding homes for these pets, the Marshmallow Foundation also works closely with local and regional service dog training programs and police departments and has had several shelter dogs go on to help people or places in need!

The staff and volunteers of the Marshmallow Foundation work hard every single day providing for the animals that have no other place to go. They do this because it is in their heart and it feeds their soul. Help them continue to care for these pets in need and provide a safe haven for them until they find new families and homes. Please consider making a donation to ensure that these animals have someplace to go when they need it most. For additional information on ways you can help, please visit our website!

Our Adoption Process...

Once you have decided to adopt an animal into your home and family, it is important to determine what type of animal would be the best fit for your lifestyle. Browse our Adoptable Cats and Adoptable Dogs sections on our website and you will get a preview of the variety of animals we have available for adoption.

In addition to choosing the type of animal, you need to determine if you have the sufficient time, resources, energy, and money to properly care and provide for your new pet! Our team at the Marshmallow Foundation can help you with this whole process! Our goal is to place pets with the best family available where the needs of the adoptable pet and the family are both being met! It is our hope that we will make that match easy and rewarding for all parties involved and promote a pet-for-life attitude!

Once you have completed and submitted the application, please allow time for processing. Adoption applications can be processed as soon as the next day but can range from one to two weeks, as we have volunteers processing our applications. There are several steps that need to be completed from phone interviews to checking references, performing home visits, etc. All our animals must be rabies vaccinated before leaving the building as well. We are a small group that works very hard to place our adoptable pets in the best homes possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding! Please visit our website to view more adoption information and requirements as well as to access the Adoption Application!
