My name is Bogey!

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

Let me introduce you to Bogey, a 3 year old, 45lb, very unique SharPei. His colouring is what makes him special and is called “flowered”. If you research flowered SharPei’s you will see dogs that look just like Bogey. Bogey is a smart, medium size dog with a gentle personality. First off though, we have to say that anyone considering adopting Bogey will have to be ok with a little doggie drool.

Bogey was surrendered to a shelter because his family was moving and they could not take him with them. SharPei often don’t do well in shelter situations so we were asked to take him into rescue so that he could have the best chance for a loving forever home. Bogey deserves a family who is as devoted to him as he will be to them. He needs to belong in a home where he will not be allowed to roam free and be safe, and where he can be confident in that fact that he is home forever and will never be lost or abandoned again. Bogey would do well in a quiet adult home. He is great in the car. Bogey has shown himself to be protective of his foster home. He will sound the alarm when he feels there is a threat. He will need a home with a secure back yard.

We are looking for a family or person for Bogey who is very aware and knowledgeable of the SharPei breed. His size, personality, and temperament are SharPei through and through. SharPei are an interesting and intelligent breed but are certainly not for everyone. We want someone who appreciates the breed and understands that they aren’t social butterfly’s, but are exceptionally loyal and loving to their family. The Canadian Kennel Club describes the SharPei temperament as
“The Shar Pei is often suspicious of strangers, which pertains to their origin as a guard dog. It is a very independent and reserved breed. Nevertheless, the Shar Pei is extremely devoted, loyal and affectionate to its family and is amenable to accepting strangers given time and proper introduction at a young age.” This describes Bogey very well. He is reserved with strangers but given time accepts them as friends. The SharPei are most noted for their devotion to their people and this is Bogey as well. Once he understands that his new family are his people, you won’t find a more loyal dog. Shar-Pei have a strong following of people who appreciate the look, personality, temperament and uniqueness of this breed so we know that there is a perfect fit out there for Bogey!

Bogey enjoys his daily walks and belly rubs. Without regular exercise, a dog tends to get into mischief. Bogey is a normal dog with below average energy. He loves to go for walks and gets very excited when it’s time to go. He does not pull and walks at average walking speed. He does well with at least two walks a day no matter what the weather. Bogey is good in the car and enjoys rides with his family.

Bogey is completely house trained and will give you a sign that he needs to go out by going to the door and pawing it or pacing. He is also past the puppy chewing stage and plays with dog toys only. Bogey is crate trained. He sleeps in the crate at night. He also eats in his crate as he can be food possessive with the other dogs in the house. He has shown improvement in this area because when it is treat time, he will sit and wait his turn. We are still in disbelief that such a beautiful and lovable dog was abandoned.

Bogey is good with other dogs and has settled in nicely with his foster siblings. He can be selective about his doggie friends though so is not a suitable candidate for dog parks. He prefers nice walks with well-behaved dog buddies, and once comfortable he enjoys a good romp around the yard with them. He loves to play and roll on the grass. He would do well in a home with another friendly, well behaved dog that isn’t over enthusiastic, but this is not a necessity for him. Bogey would do just as well being the only dog and getting all the attention.

Bogey loves his people and wants to be around them all the time. He will snuggle with you on the couch or lie beside you while you are working. He will need a family willing to devote the time to make sure that he continues to be properly socialized and trained. Bogey slobbers and he will need a family who is ok with doggie drool and who will do well to keep drool rags handy to wipe down walls and furniture.

Bogey is not good with his two foster cats and wants to chase them all the time. His foster family is teaching him not to chase them but he is being very stubborn in this regard. Bogey is not being fostered in a home with children and we believe that Bogey would do better in an adult only home. Bogey knows basic obedience including "sit", “lie down”, give paw and “time for bed”. Bogey's new family should commit to continuing his obedience training to bring out the best in this smart dog. In the end you will have a fantastic dog that has all the love in the world to give.

Bogey also needs to go to a family that understands that SharPei are prone to certain medical issues. Bogey has a history of allergies which is kept in check with antihistamines on occasion. This is something his family will need to be aware of. This, again, is very common in the SharPei breed so nothing that SharPei lovers aren’t already aware of. The huge benefit of the SharPei is that they are moderate energy and don’t require excessive amounts of energy to be happy. Care needs to be taken in the heat as Bogey is susceptible to breathing issues if over -heated, and they can over heat fast, so walks in the early morning and later evening during summer months are needed to ensure his safety.

Dogs are very cute, Bogey in particular, and hard to resist but they do require a lot of time commitment and are not for everyone. Bogey loves life and is a happy, affectionate boy. You won’t find a more interesting looking dog and he is certainly a conversation starter wherever he goes. He is looking for a forever home to share his life with. If you are looking for a dog that is mature, independent and easy going, Bogey may just be the perfect one for you!
