About Happy Hearts German Shepherd Rescue - San Marcos Chapter

About Our Rescue Group...

Happy Hearts rescues dogs from high kill shelters who are in eminent danger of being killed. We rehabilitate according to the needs of each dog as it comes in but the primary issues we deal with are building trust and learning appropriate behavior to function in the world. We take in many senior dogs that have high medical expenses and it is only though the generosity of donors helping with these expenses that we can continue to do this. Fosters who generously open their homes and hearts to dogs desperate for love and support are the foundation of everything we do. We are a small, private rescue that is foster based so that dogs can be given the attention they need. We use boarding only to get a dog out of a kill situation when they have a few hours left in the shelter. We will usually locate a foster within a week or two to get them started on a new life filled with love and support. Occasionally dogs will need more extensive training and rehab before going into foster care. Volunteers who are able to help with walking or office work or who have special skills are alway needed.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We are located just East of San Diego City and appointments to see a dog need to be made so we can be available. Our dogs are located in foster homes throughout California. Please check our Facebook page at Happy Hearts GSD Rescue or our Web page at HappyHeartsGSDRescue.org.

Our Adoption Process...

Our dogs are $200 to $300 which includes neutering, all shots and chip as well as addressing any medical issues which are apparent at the time. We normally do a two week foster to adopt. When a dog is adopted we integrate it into it's new home, usually over a period of one or two weeks. The potential adopter first visits the dog at it's foster to determine if they have a connection and want to pursue the adoption process. Then the dog and it's foster visit with the adopter in their home several times until it is apparent that the dog is bonding and is comfortable and ready to make the move. The dog may be left for a few hours as it becomes more comfortable but we do not do overnighters. A trainer is available for all dogs as needed. A contract is signed and the dog is paid for. The adopter agrees to return the dog to Happy Hearts if for any reason the dog must be relinquished. A refund is given only during the initial two week foster to adopt. After the first two weeks no refund can be given. All donations are tax deductible.
