My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

JACK is a 4 year old neutered black male Lab. Jack was an owner surrender to the shelter. Jack's first owner kept him on a chain, neglected, and abused him. The family who adopted Jack from the shelter provided a loving home and helped build his confidence. Unfortunately, because of emergent family medical issues, Jack's second owner was unable to provide a stable environment for him and relinquished him to the shelter. Jack is a beautiful, blocky headed guy that needs an experienced family to provide balance and direction. No first time adopters. Jack would do best in a home with another confident dog to show him the ropes....and help him lose weight ;) While Jack is not afraid of children, he needs an adult only home because he doesn't care for typical youngster shenanigans. Jack loves to retrieve balls and will carry one around in his mouth. He also likes to carry a shoe in his mouth around the house but will not chew it. Jack likes to take it slow initially but warms up quickly. Once he bonds with you, he is an affectionate dog. He loves to sit with you and be close to you. The evaluator said Jack was relaxed when she handled him all over but seemed a bit sensitive when she touched his back legs. She thought it may be due to some pain from living on a chain. Jack is a bit chunky so will need regular exercise and a reduced calorie diet to shed those extra pounds. Jack is good with other dogs and with cats, too! He lived with a cat and they took walks together. Jack is approved for adult only households (ages 18 and up). He is approved for kids 18+.

Update: Jack spent a long weekend at a temporary foster home and has come so far since he's been with Lab Rescue. He has not cared a bit about the activity/ commotion in her neighborhood including buses, garbage trucks, kids on scooters, strollers, and other dogs. He enjoys sleeping on a dog bed next to her bed and will go downstairs for a quick check on the resident dog (who doesn't do stairs). He sleeps deep, and snores, which makes his foster mom laugh! He trots into his crate when she has to leave for over an hour or two and is happy as a clam. When she gets home and lets him out he trots out proudly caring a stuffy and showing off. He has had a dog walker when she's gone, and walks perfectly for her. He's cautiously met some men, and fallen in love with them relatively quickly as long as they go slowly. He is a love bug and over all happy go lucky boy.

Update: Jack stopped at the creek during his evening walk – loves the water! He was so patient hanging out when his foster mom stopped to talk to the neighbors, and he is wonderful on walks, no pulling. He is meeting new people and dogs all the time and is so much more confident. He even kissed the male roofing contractor who was a new face to both Jack and his foster mom. Jack has been traveling a lot with his fosters and he is excellent in the car. He is such a sweet boy! Jack is looking for a home with another dog friend to hang out with.
Update: Jack has lost a few pounds - down to a lean 79 lbs! He visited with foster mom's adult son last weekend who was home, and had to decide if he liked him or not, so he went from barking at him to kissing him. When it comes to men, he just needs extra time to realize they aren't going to hurt him. He has turned out to be a good watch dog, and will bark at noises outside or anyone coming into the house that he doesn't know, but will settle when you tell him it's okay. He is a little thief, when you aren't watching and he wants attention, he will take your personal items, like papers, sunglasses, clothes. He will always give them back to you unharmed if a treat is waiting. He has gotten more interested in his bones and still likes to retrieve the ball. Jack has no interest in squirrels, toads, or cats on our walks, and has a low prey drive. He has met several other dogs on his walks and enjoys them. He is still leery of unexpected noises, but is continuing to learn what won't hurt him, like tearing off aluminum foil, that's okay now. A real velcro dog, but now he will now go into another room and sleep when foster mom is home and doesn't have to stay right with her all the time.

Update: This pup is a sweetheart, and is looking for a home that will give him confidence, where he knows love, patience and security. He loves the water, we went to the beach recently and he retrieved the ball in the water and played with his LRCP alumni. He loves his walks and looks to you for his treats while learning his commands, wait and ok. He has even trimmed down a few pounds and is lean with a beautiful black coat. A quieter suburban home with another confident dog is the best for him, since loud noises will spook him, like garbage trucks dumping trash, yipping dogs, and loud garage doors. You just need to be aware of that and keep a strong hold on the lead and let him know it's okay and keep moving. He will bark when he hears a knock at the door so that's a nice security feature.
Update:: Jack continues to blossom. He needs a home with another stable dog and an owner that will continue to help gain his confidence. He is learning the wait command at door thresholds and curbs. He is treat motivated, and a quick learner. He loves his walks and continues to gain confidence and doesn’t pull on the leash. He has met some other dogs and people on our walks and he is calm and willing to engage. He has stayed in the laundry room willingly when his foster mom leaves for work, and she has left him with free run of the house for a few hours and he is fine. He loves to retrieve. He has found the bone/ball basket and does chew on bones. He does know how to bark, but does it sparingly. He is a sweetheart and loves his belly rubbed. Jack likes to know where his humans are in the house and follows you everywhere, but will settle immediately. Still sleeps quietly through the night.
Update:: Jack is such a sweet and handsome guy! He stays close and is eager to receive and give affection--tail wagging, flopping down for belly rubs, sweet kisses on your arm to say hi. He sleeps soundly through the night on his dog bed, snoring away as he dreams. He happily goes into his crate during the work day, content with a few treats and a toy (although I think he would be fine having the run of the house--he hasn't chewed on or disturbed anything). He has enjoyed having my 4 year old black lab as a companion. They have playful spurts but then settle down and hang out next to each other. He tends to follow my dog's lead, which has seemed to build some confidence. He is a wonderful walker. He doesn't pull, just trots happily and sniffs to explore. He is very food motivated so it would be easy to train him even more so than he already is--for example, I have my dog sit when a bike goes by and give him a treat. Jack has caught on and sits and looks for a treat as well! I feel like stable love and additional confidence boosting are all he needs to get over his nervousness.
Update: Jack has been a love bug since his foster mom picked him up 3 days ago. During the car ride home, he was a great traveler and slept most of the way in the back seat. At home he has been calm, and wants to stay with you. He is housebroken. He steers clear of loud noises like the hairdryer, and just leaves the room and waits till you're finished, or will take your shoe for comfort, not to chew, just hold. He likes to retrieve the ball, won't drop it yet, but we have plenty, so we just rotate. He only has a little interest in bones so far. He sleeps though the night and this boy snores!
He is walking using a harness and he walks well and hasn't really tugged and doesn't seem interested in squirrels. He's seen other dogs on the walk, and if they are yippee, he stops, takes it in and hesitates a little, so his foster mom just adjusts and encourages him to continue. He is a beautiful boy and is learning where the treats are, sits for these and is very gentle.
Update:: Jack knows a few commands: sit, lay down, and play dead. He gets along well with the resident Dachshund, and doesn't play rough with him. They just enjoy each other's company. He doesn't have much of an interest in toys. He's more of a cuddler. He loves to nap. Anywhere, anytime. He doesn't cry or bark. He sleeps through the night as well. He is perfectly housetrained. He has been in the crate for the workday and did fine. He likes to watch TV with his head on your lap, but can get a little scared with sudden loud noises, like fireworks on TV. He just leaves the room and goes to lay in the hallway away from the noise. He is a total ladies man. He loves his belly rubs and will take one every chance he gets. He also walks well on a leash.
Update: Jack is nervous around men, so he needs to go to a home with women only and with an adopter who will be patient to show him that everything will be okay.
