My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kovu 2-yr-old male black Lab 60 lbs.

Kovu came from a small family who lost their home and are now living in a motel where pets are not allowed. He's a young Lab/German Shepherd cross, according to his owners. After he was surrendered, his confusion, nervous energy & depression kept him off the adoptable list at the shelter. Luckily he was rescued by the SPCA, neutered, vaccinated, and treated for kennel cough, skin allergies and ear infections. He is now with a Lab Rescue foster awaiting his new forever home.

What Kovu’s Foster says: After 7 weeks behind bars, he now showers us with affection, and has 5 acres to expend all that pent-up energy! Like his namesake in The Lion King, there's nothing subtle about this exuberant boy. He's generous with licks and loves to put those (big) paws on the objects of his affection. He's still adjusting to "life on the outside," and goes a little overboard at times! He craves company, & is a bit barky noisy if left alone. He gets along well with 2 out of 3 of our dogs [An unneutered male being the exception.]. Kovu also gets along with our cat. Right now, he's needy and craves affection and contact, but he is capable of entertaining himself. While he is interested in some toys, Kovu has little interest in chasing or retrieving balls. He knows "sit," "shake" and "stay," for very short intervals.

What Kovu’s Rescue Rep says: Kovu's teeth, coat, weight & general health are good, although chronic ear infections will require regular cleaning. He's in need of basic obedience training, but is willing and affectionate. He will need a human who can spend time with him; he's happy to just hang out, but an active family (with older kids, as his enthusiasm might intimidate smaller children) would be a good fit. Kovu is ready for a job, if you've got one! He is neutered, microchipped, and current on shots. We are working with our vet to resolve Kovu’s apparent allergies (to something?) which is causing him to itch and scratch himself. Kovu is currently located in Vacaville.

If you are interested in Kovu, call Rescue Rep Dave, 415-686-4248.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
