Barney is a sweet and rambunctious young Shepherd mix estimated at just over a year of age. Barney was originally a stray in the Daviess County area therefore we do not know much about his back story. Barney has been with us since July 2016 though so we have come to know him very well and just don't know why this sweet boy keeps getting overlooked. Barney did have one adoption where he was returned because he decided to play tug-o-war with the hoodie of a young child. The family said Barney was amazing otherwise but they didn't have the time to train him nor did they want to supervise he and the kids in the yard.

Barney is an outgoing and friendly dog. He enjoys getting attention and is very playful but can also be a laid back cuddle bug. He is fostered in a home with a 5 year old child who has grown up around dogs and is very savvy with rambunctious guys like Barney. They get along great and have had no problems as long as proper boundaries and supervision are in place. While Barney can be energetic he is also level enough to calm down and enjoy a day lazing around the house. He is more of a medium to high energy dog verses a constantly on the go high energy dog.

Barney does great with other dogs and being smaller than all his foster siblings can cause quite the riot running circles around them. Barney is a generally friendly and social guy. He did test cat friendly initially however he is not fostered with a cat and we would be happy to have him tested again before placing him in a home with cats.

Barney is a true gem of a dog who despite not having much guidance has turned out amazingly well. Barney is going to need a home willing to dedicate time to training and providing energy outlets. His open, eager, and willing personality would make him a great candidate for agility or other dog sports.

About Tier Haven Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Tier Haven Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit animal rescue agency based in Louisville, KY that specializes in German Shepherds and similar working breeds. Tier Haven realizes that many German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) find themselves in shelters due to a lack of training and understanding of the breed. Tier Haven is a no-kill rescue which limits the number of dogs we can care for at any given time for this reason Tier Haven focuses on taking dogs from shelters that are in direct risk of euthanasia and has a separate policy for owner surrenders.

Surrender Policy

Tier Haven accepts owner surrenders on a conditional basis due to the large number of dogs in kill shelters. If you have a dog you would like to surrender you must email pictures and the reason for surrendering to Tier Haven does charge a fee for surrendering a dog; $80 for a fully vetted dog (vaccinations, alter, heartworm test) when vet records are provided and $150 for un-vetted dogs.

Our Adoption Process...

Tier Haven requires an adoption application to be completed and processed prior to meeting or adopting any of our dogs. As a completely foster based organization Tier Haven relies on the application to help ensure that adopters are only meeting dogs that are suitable for their household based on various factors. The application is completed via email and you may email us at to obtain an application. When submitting an application please contact your vet clinic and provide them with a release of information and also inform your personal references that they will be contacted.

Once your application is processed you will be contacted by a volunteer to discuss potential dogs and arrange a meet and greet. Since we are a foster based group we only allow up to three (3) dogs on each meet and greet to keep it manageable for everyone. Meet and greets are often held at public locations to respect the privacy of our foster homes and they are scheduled at the discretion of the foster homes.

Tier Haven charges an adoption fee of $250 for each dog. This includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, heart-worm test, micro-chip, and monthly preventative care while with our organization. All medical records are provided at the time of adoption along with an adoption contract.
