My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

To a true-blue, died in the wool dog lover, nothing in the world is sweeter or more life-affirming than a puppy. But this precious pup was discarded at 4 weeks old, along with his littermate, and missed out on some much needed socialization. Our good friends at the Kansas Humane Society asked us to help this little guy catch up on life and we happily obliged. As a matter of fact, he is in my lap as I type, with a sweet smile on his face. And now, 4 weeks later, the little pooch is happy and healthy and well-adjusted. He gets carried around by a 12-year-old girl and kissed on his precious face all the time. He runs in and out the doggie door with his foster companions and mostly remembers to go potty before he comes back in. He kennels overnight with no potty problems. And he sleeps with his sweet face on a toy and cuddles his favorite blanket. He is a full-fledged puppy!

We tried out a couple of names the first day with no response from him. But on the second day, as I watched him figure out where he was and how life had changed, I told him he was a little "trooper." And as his eyes met mine, he was named: Trooper (aka Super Duper Pooper Trooper). Troop is 3-4 months old and currently weighs about 16 pounds. We are guessing he is a smooth Collie/Australian cattle dog mix. He is smart and seems to have some herding instinct.

There are some fabulous humans who helped Trooper along on his way. Kansas Humane Society in Wichita, Kansas went the extra mile to find a rescue that would give the puppy enough time and handling to be successful. Without that piece of the puzzle, Trooper would not have had any chance at all. Sharon and Greg Gempler, volunteers with Pilots and Paws, brought Trooper from Wichita, Kansas to Denver, Colorado. Deb and Kelly Killion brought the little fellow from the airport in Denver right to the door of our Director, kissing and cuddling all along the way. A 12-year-old girl has hand fed Trooper to help him understand that it is important to have a gentle mouth. As a wise woman once said... it truly takes a village to help a dog.

We will be looking for a very specific home for Trooper. He would do best in a home where people are around a good chunk of the day with no very young children. He needs a well-adjusted and friendly dog or two to play with. He loves to fly around a secure yard for a game of tag, grab a toy and play tug, zoom in the doggie door, take a nap on a cushy dogbed and do it all over again. And Trooper's foster family will be sobbing as the boy leaves their arms to go to his forever home. We will need lots of pictures and updates.

Please begin the process for adoption by reading our  Adoption Policies  and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online  Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email.  You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously.  Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
