Colt and a few of his canine friends were transported from an Indiana shelter in hopes of finding their new forever home. Colt is a 4 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound who unfortunately tested positive for heartworm. He's been treated for it and will soon be back to normal. Ideally, Colt would thrive best in a home with no children under the age of 15. This type of breed is not suitable for apartment dwellers because of their size, vocalization and personality and would need a fenced in yard. Hound experienced owners are strongly advised. If you have no prior knowledge of Coonhounds but think that Colt would be a good fit, then please do some research and/or speak to an adoption counselor today.

Colt should be placed in a home, preferably without other dogs, or after a mandatory dog to dog introduction. Colt is not the best with strangers and has been known to guard his property, therefore a very experienced and understanding adopter is required.

About South Suburban Humane Society

About Our Shelter...

The South Suburban Humane Society is a 501(c )(3) organization that was started in 1970, serving the animal welfare needs of the entire south suburbs of Chicago. In the beginning, we handled all rescues, adoptions and provided foster care out of private homes. Since November 1973, our organization has been operating a 10,000 square foot open-door animal shelter in Chicago Heights, Illinois.

For forty years, our organization has helped tens of thousands of animals. We have grown from a small group of volunteers to an organization made up of volunteers and paid employees that were responsible for almost 4,400 animals in 2013. We offer extensive outreach programs including humane education, and community outreach events. We also operate two resale shops located in Steger, Illinois and Chicago Heights, Illinois that promote our organization, our animals and provide much needed income to support our humane work.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We also have adoptable cats at THREE PetSmart locations! PetSmart Tinley Park, PetSmart Orland Hills, and Petsmart Schererville, IN are both key adoption partners where many of our adoptable kittens and cats are housed until they find their forever homes.
