Here's what the humans have to say about me:
No doubt about our Jake is a basketcase. He has a harrowing story to tell and he has a right to be pretty peeved about it! He is the victim of human abuse, having been kicked in the jaw so hard, he needed surgical repair of his shattered mandible. After enduring a procedure that inserted a metal plate to stabilize his jaw, Jake came to us for R&R, but his jaw wasn't all that needed healing.
When Jake arrived over a year ago, his spirit was in tatters. He was very slow to trust and understandably hypersensitive about anyone touching his head or neck, near his incision site. After three months of going slow, and allowing Jake to warm to our touch, he had to endure a second procedure: sedated X-rays, and then a dental surgery to remove a cracked tooth related to the same injury.
Now that several months have passed, and Jake's injury has healed, we suspect that he has some ongoing soft tissue tenderness. He still has some slight sensitivity, and can become snappy when handled by the collar. A Halti or "no slip" harness is most suitable for him, and he has adapted to it very well.
Based on his appearance, Jake appears to be a mix of long haired Miniature Dachshund and Papilion. He is a tiny boy and weighs just 11 pounds, He has the elongated spine that we see in the Dachshund, and the tricolor Sheltie style fluffy coat and butterfly ears. We've had him groomed several times, and he has done surprisingly well with that sort of handling, despite his history. At the Vet, we opt for tranquilizing him to relieve the trauma that he seems to relive after so many painful jaw recheck visits. Still, it's best that adopters seek out a seasoned Groomer and Vet used to handling fragile Rescue dogs.
The ideal home for Jake is undoubtedly a quiet one, with patient adults who understand how to slowly build a lasting bond, and repair trust with a broken rescue dog. He needs a special type of adopter, who can really wrap their mind around healing a traumatized rescue dog. Jake is not likely to give a Disney moment at the adoption, but his folks will be rewarded with slow and steady progress, as Jake moves past his trauma.
We don't think that he is suitable for a busy family with small children, or a hectic multi-dog home. Jake seems to respond best to peace and quiet. He's gotten to the point here, that he will sleep on the couch, roll over on his back, with exposed belly, but only after things have settled down and the environment is quiet. He would do best with an adopter who doesn't have expectations of a lap dog or a cuddle-bug. Jake is very affectionate, but very tentative and can spook easily. He could live peacefully with one other small, calm dog, and we think he would be a good companion for a dog savvy cat.
Jake has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during Jake's transition to a new home. He is in excellent health, and is at an ideal, lean body weight of 11 pounds. He has been neutered, and has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
