Facts about Sonny

  • Breed: Italian Greyhound
  • Color: Tan/Yellow/Fawn
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less
  • Sex: Male
We don’t know what Sonny’s original name was before coming into Rescue but based on his happy, sunny disposition and the golden color of the new fur his is growing his foster mom named him Sonny; the name fits him perfectly. Sonny was found as a stray by local area Animal Services; based on his level of mal-nutrition and his overall poor condition it appeared he had been living on the streets for quite some time. He is estimated to be 10 years old but he is much younger in spirit and zest for life. Sonny is “visually challenged” due to corneal edema and cataracts; he does see light and shadows and is fully mobile. He loves to go for walks ( walking in soft light such as early morning or evening not direct sunlight ), hang out with his foster brother and he especially loves to play “carpet angels”. He knows exactly where the refrigerator is and when it is open. He is on a dehydrated raw diet which is kept fresh in the refrigerator; he has learned quickly “treasures” come from the frig. He loves to eat and has put on weight since being in Rescue and with good nutrition he is re-growing fur which is soft and healthy; we strongly recommend that his new family continue with this excellent diet.
Sonny is a “special needs” little man because of his limited vision but there is no limitation to the amount of love he shares with everyone he meets; in our eyes he is just “special”. There is no treatment or surgery to resolve the condition of his eyes; his ophthalmologist has prescribed non-steroidal eye drops to provide palliative anti-inflammatory therapy; the drops are administered 3 times a week, one drop in each eye. A 2.5 ml bottle will last at least 3 months; cost is $8.00 per month. Sonny’s potty training is still a “work in process”; he will potty on leash but it is best that he wear a belly band when no one is home to take him outside.

Sonny needs a calm, loving home environment, adults only. While he does like other dogs they will need to be calm, non-assertive and small; for his safety, he should not be taken to a dog park. He does enjoy going where ever his human is going; he rides well in the car in his crate.

We all need some special sunshine in our lives; please consider applying to adopt of Sonny Boy.

About Italian Greyhound Rescue Southern California

About Our Rescue Group...

Rescue is a re-homing service provided for full-breed Italian Greyhounds that have been abandoned at an animal shelters or surrendered to Rescue the owner.

Approved IGCA Rescue Foster Caregivers provide care for these orphans in their homes, where their health and temperament are evaluated so that they can be placed in a home that can best meet the needs of the dog. Before being placed all dogs are taken for a veterinary check-up where vaccinations are updated, the animal is neutered or spayed, any serious medical conditions are treated, and if necessary, their teeth are cleaned. Each Italian Greyhound can potentially cost Rescue hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars to rehabilitate. All members of Italian Greyhound Rescue are strictly volunteers; they donate their time and expertise without any compensation for their services.
