Facts about Smokey

  • Age: Adult
  • Sex: Male
  • ID#: 10392655
  • Hair: Short

Smokey was rescued after being found abandoned in an apartment. Despite his past trauma, he is an affectionate and loving cat, looking for his forever home!

Smokey is an incredibly playful cat. He loves toys that he can chase and pounce (like the Cat Dancer toy). He is totally not fooled by a laser pointer, and doesn’t really “get” a lot of puzzle toys, but will happily chase any bit of ribbon you dangle.

Smokey’s favourite thing by far is snuggling. While he’s not much of a lap cat and doesn’t love being picked up, don’t be surprised to find this ball of fur pressed up next to you in bed or on the couch!

While getting used to a new home, the most important this is to build trust with Smokey. Don’t be surprised if he stakes out a piece of furniture to hide under and claims it as his territory! But after a few days of play, patience and spoiling him with treats, he’ll soon feel comfortable enough to sprawl out in the middle of the floor, or on a perch where he can do some window-watching. It's also a good idea to give him space while he gets used to you, but - trust me! - soon he'll be wanting to spend time with you all day!

Smokey isn't a fan of being put in his carrier, so it's best that his forever home leaves the carrier out at all times, almost like a cat bed with a blanket inside, and try to encourage him to go in occasionally with cat nip, toys and treats. That way, when you do have to put him in the carrier for visits to the vet, it'll be easier to get him in.

When it comes to trimming his claws, his foster mom finds that the best method is to get him to lie in bed with you, and then gently trim them, one paw at a time, and let him dictate when he wants to stop..

Smokey needs a patient experienced adopter. It will take him a bit to feel comfortable in his new home. He might hide under some furniture while he gets used to a new person, and may be a bit grumpy. While Smokey is getting used to his new home, it's a good idea to wear slippers inside the home, as the heavy tread of shoes makes him nervous. Despite his dislike of change in environment, he will settle in fairly quickly. It only took him three days in his new foster home to be comfortable.

Smokey takes a daily medication to help his anxiety levels. He would do best in a home with no small children, and no other pets in the home.

About Annex Cat Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Cat Adoption with a Difference

The Annex Cat Rescue began as a group of volunteers living primarily in the Annex neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We now have members from all over the city. We share a common bond -- a love of cats and concern for their welfare. We are a non-profit organization and have no government funding.

It is our goal to eliminate cruelty to animals by providing for the fostering and adoption of cats that are homeless, abandoned, or where their owners (through illness, age, or death) can no longer care for them. We try to educate members of our community regarding the proper care of cats and to provide information aimed at reducing the feral, homeless, and abandoned populations. Throughout the year, we assist in the feeding of many feral cat colonies and operate a trap-neuter/spay-return (TNR) program.

Please lend your support to our cause by adopting one of our wonderful cats or by contributing a small donation!

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The success of Annex Cat Rescue depends on the dedication of our volunteers -- not just the foster homes and trappers who work hands-on, but also those who support ACR's rescue work behind-the-scenes. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in becoming a volunteer, or expanding your work within the organization, please apply online.

Please see our website for some ways you can help. Our experienced volunteers are always there to support you, and even a few hours of your time every month can make a big difference.

Come Meet Our Pets...

The Annex Cat Rescue is a grassroots community organization. We are 100% non-paid volunteer-run. Our organization attempts to make a real difference for the homeless, stray and abandoned cats in this city through direct intervention and education. Every day, many people turn to us for help when Toronto Animal Services cannot.

ACR does *not* run an animal shelter. All of our cats/kittens live in volunteer foster homes across Toronto where they are allowed to blossom and grow in a "home" environment (rather than in cages), and where they receive individual attention and love.

While this prevents possible behavioural problems associated with caging animals, this also allows us to get to know each animal intimately and thus we can make excellent matches with adopters. Potential adopters are required to make appointments to view the animals in their respective homes.

Our organization is "no kill". This means that cats in our care remain in foster homes are not euthanized (except for dire humane reasons). City shelters do not have such a policy.

Our Adoption Process...

If you are thinking of adopting a cat or kitten, please contact us. Annex Cat Rescue has matched over 1000 cats and kittens with good adoptive homes since our group started!

Annex Cat Rescue cats live in real homes with our foster volunteers -- not in cages! This way, the cats live in normal homes and receive good food and medical care -- and lots of personal attention. We get to know each cat, so we can help you find the best cat for you. It's kind of like a kitty match-making service!

All of our cats are vaccinated, have been de-wormed, and are spayed or neutered once they reach six months of age.

We are always available if you have questions or concerns as your new cat is adjusting to your home.

Here is our adoption process:

  • Please leave a voice mail or email.

  • One of our Adoption Team volunteers will contact you to find out more about the kind of kitty you are looking for. We will suggest which of our cats might be the best match for you, and put you in touch with a few foster homes for you to contact.

  • You can go and visit the cat in the foster home and see if you think it's a match.

  • If you fall in love on the spot (so easy with kitties!) we ask you to go home and think about it overnight, since it's an important decision for you and for the kitty.

  • Then, if it's a match, you can bring your cat carrier (and the adoption fee -- which is modest and does not cover all of our expenses) then take your kitty home! We ask all adopters to sign our adoption agreement, which just sets out some basics so we all understand our roles, with the kitty's best interests first and foremost!

  • A day or two later, we'll call you to make sure all is well and provide any suggestions that might be helpful, if needed.

The Annex Cat Rescue's motto is "Cat Adoption with a Difference." If the adoption does not work out (a rare occurrence, in part due to our excellent "match-making"!), whatever the reason, the cat will always be welcomed back to our organization. We want the best for our kitties!
