Sometimes understanding a breed is very important before you adopt a dog to live as a family member in your home. Bandit is an Australian Cattle Dog (or Red Heeler}
and is very typical of the breed. ACDs, as they are also know, are protective, in charge, strong, curious, faithful, and even tempered dogs. They are a member of the herding
group, so they need a job or activity that provides an outlet for physical and mental energy. The breed is considered one of the 5 most intelligent dogs. They are used on farms
and ranches to herd cattle, and are good agility participants. They can sometimes lightly nip in play, as this is the way in which they herd cattle, by nipping at their heels. They
are a one person dog, but can be trained to be obedient around children, cats, and other dogs.
Bandit is approximately 3 to 4 years old. He is a medium sized dog, weighing about 35 pounds. He is red speckled, with a soft, fine coat. He may be mixed with some Corgi, as his legs
are somewhat shorter than standard. He lives with my three dogs, and is tolerant of them, but seems to mainly want to play with the male 3 year old mutt. Wriggling around on the floor,
chasing each other in the back yard, and retrieving ropes and balls are the favorite play activities. Bandit needs to know the order of command in his household. Cattle dogs quickly like to take control, so their master needs to show who's dominant. Bandit occasionally will low growl, or stand to intimate my other dogs, but he is learning that this is unacceptable. Bandit
loves attention, and is bonded to my husband and I. He would prefer that we stay with him all the time, so a home where his owner is mostly home is ideal. He does not like a crate. He is
able to jump over gates, and push open doors. A large yard is best for him to run, but he walks on a leash also.
Bandit has special needs due to losing an eye before he came to us. He gets along quite well, but you must be careful reaching for him. I always approach him with my hand from the good
eye side so he is not startled. He is quite good at going up and down steps or jumping up on the couch or bed. We suspect that he may be partially deaf, maybe in the ear where he lost his
eye. Sometimes he seems like he can not hear us calling him and he sleeps extremely soundly.
Bandit loves to curl up on the couch beside me with his chin across my leg. When I am cooking, he loves to observe from under the table, watching quietly and patiently. He has a deep bark,
but we only hear it in the morning when he is ready to go out, or when he's hungry, or when we come home and he expresses his joy. He is a very good boy who deserves a forever
home with a strong owner experienced with his breed.

About Friends of Homeless Animals, Inc.(FOHA)

About Our Rescue Group...

We are a volunteer group that are helping primarily Boston Terriers, Boston mixes and other small dogs when resources permit. We rescue locally and all around the country - if our need help is needed.
  • We do not have a shelter so there are no set visiting hours or place to visit. We foster all the dogs in foster homes in various locations.

    We need foster parents!

We cannot save any dogs without volunteers to help foster our animals. Please help us to help them - become a foster parent.

Donations are gladly accepted and appreciated.
If you cannot adopt a dog, foster a dog or donate your time, we have made it easy for you to make a donation online.
Donations can be made securely by Paypal:

  • Come Meet Our Pets...

We do NOT have a shelter. All our dogs are fostered in individual homes. Meetings are by appointment only after you have completed our online application. THANKS!

    Our Adoption Process...

Our dogs listed on Adopt a Pet all have initials following the name of the dog. The initials show the State: RI, CT, NJ, NY, etc. where these dogs are being fostered.
If you see a dog with initials after the name of the dog, these are dogs that are not in our LOCAL area but transport will be arranged for those dogs. For example: W, CF, M, RH, etc.

Please remember that we are ALL volunteers & will respond to you as quickly as we can in all communications. We are not paid volunteers and try to keep the phones and emails manned but sometimes there may be a lapse in time. We appreciate your patience.

Step 1 - Complete an online application -

Step 2 - Please reserve your dog by making a $200 deposit on Paypal -

E-mail address to use for deposit (which is applied toward total donation) is:

You can meet any of our local dogs with JUST an online application and NO deposit, but must be approved, etc. 1st in order to take your dog home.

Step 3 - Let your references know that a volunteer will be contacting them.

Step 4 - Once your references are contacted, a volunteer will be in touch to arrange your home visit.

Step 5 - Once you have been approved, pick up information, balance due, and adoption contract will be e-mailed to you.

Please remember our dogs generally all have a pull fee from a shelter, LOTS of vet costs for initial shots and tests, spay or neuter, and then transport costs to bring the dogs to our area. This is just the beginning of the costs for a rescue. We then depend on our volunteers to buy the dog food, we pay for any additional vetting costs and grooming for the dog. There are many costs and we depend on our adoption donations to HELP pay our costs. We are a non-profit charity 501(c)3 and depend on donations for rescuing our dogs. Most times, the adoption fee does not cover the costs associated with that dogs rescue costs.

Donations are listed on each dog's description.

References listed on your application will be checked prior to any meetings with a dog. We do require a HOME VISIT PRIOR to any adoption.

Some dogs are local, but many are not - they are in various locations so it will not be possible to meet some of them before you adopt.

We only will transport the dogs if you make a firm commitment and a $200 DEPOSIT as the paid transport is costly & difficult to arrange & we do not have enough foster homes.

Deposit Donations can be made by Paypal:
