My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Fontina is a Pit Bull Terrier/Boxer-mix, female, 8 months of age.

Sweet, sincere, calm, undemanding, mild-mannered, and aiming to please; this happy, affectionate little charmer, while being quietly unassuming, will completely steal your heart. A sensitive, gentle soul who is both good-natured and well-mannered, Fontina is becoming increasingly more confident and now gives telltale signs of her genuine love for people with warm expression and enthusiastic tail-wag (we call it wiggle-butt). Readily sharing her affection and kisses upon invitation, this adorable beauty is a people-oriented canine who lives for companionship and close contact, and she loves to snuggle with her people.

Animated, lively, curious, spunky, and very playful, Fontina needs regular mental stimulation and physical activity to stay happy and healthy. Her exercise needs are pretty modest though and can be met with leashed walks, interactive outdoor romps and play sessions, and adventurous outings alongside family members who she will, of course, be fawningly devoted to. It will be a huge bonus and Fontina will appreciate having a fenced yard where she can run, play, and explore with family members and on her own too.

Barely out of puppyhood, Fontina is looking for responsible, caring owners who will appreciate a high-functioning young pup and provide her with all the attention, leadership, and companionship she needs and deserves for the rest of her life. In spite of her youth, this endearing young pup consistently shows herself to be an extremely intelligent and obedient canine who learns commands readily and is quick to please when she knows what is expected of her.

When outdoors on leash, she is well-mannered, but exuberantly puppy-like and pretty interested/easily distracted which means she sometimes forgets her canine good manners and wants to pull on the leash. With patient guidance and follow-through though, she redirects from distractions easily and falls into step quickly. No doubt, Fontina will enjoy and benefit from training and socialization classes -- this will also be an excellent way to bond with her as well as to reinforce good canine manners.

Fontina is best suited as an indoor pet and companion for a home with a low-active to moderately-active lifestyle. Extremely social and friendly, Fontina currently lives in foster home with other dogs and cats -- all who she enjoys the company of and gets along well with. She’s also crate-trained and becoming increasingly more comfortable meeting and interacting with children, although active and/or unruly young children still cause her to become hesitant and want to withdraw, so we are looking for a home for her without toddler-aged or younger children. As with all Monroe SPCA adoptable dogs, a home visit and a meet-n-greet with any housemate pets will be required prior to adoption.

You can meet Fontina at Monroe SPCA adoption events and by pre-arrangement with approved Adoption Application. All Monroe SPCA dogs available for adoption and in foster homes have an adoption fee of $200.00. This fee includes the dog being spayed or neutered, HW negative, up-to-date on age appropriate vaccinations, and micro-chipped prior to adoption.
