Facts about Brutus

  • Color: Tan/Yellow/Fawn
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)
  • Sex: Male
This is Brutus. He is currently our longest IOW resident. This handsome boy has been with us since April of 2016. That's OVER 425 days. I'll tell you something, though... it's not ideal for ANY dog to be in a shelter environment for that long... but we'll give credit where credit is due. Despite living in a kennel for that long, Brutus has never lost his "happy". If only humans were just as capable. He hasn't given up hope - and he revels in a good visit with a person or a walk or good game of fetch. Brutus LOVES to play fetch! He'll bring that tennis ball back EVERY time... and did we mention that he enjoys a good swim, too?
If Brutus had shoes, take a moment to put yourself in them. While he has dedicated staff and volunteers that make sure to keep him happy... how would you feel after losing your family and sitting in the same kennel for over a year? Would you be as happy as him? Would you be as forgiving of the cards that you've been dealt?
I have so much respect for a dog who can be in a shelter environment for so long and just... keep on keepin' on. It takes a special dog to handle that. Most people would be depressed, angry, or spiteful... but not Brutus. He enjoys every moment of life he's handed, and we can't believe that he hasn't found his forever yet. This dog finds the joy in every opportunity he has.
Mind you, he's a big boy. He's also a strong boy. He's been dog tested with both a stable female and male dog and passed with flying colors. From our assessment, we think he'd do well in a home with a nonchalant dog or one who doesn't want to rule the roost. The best way to find out if your current dog will be a good brother or sister to Brutus is for you to come in and set up a meet and greet with us. That way, we can make sure that they will be a good match for each other - as well as your family. Brutus is ALSO kid tested and approved! Like I said, he's a strong dude... so he will have to be handled by an adult when it comes to walks. If you have cats living in the house, we are willing to do additional cat testing - so just let us know!

Our Adoption Process...

Dogs, puppies, cats, kittens and other companion animals are available at the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter. As of March 1, 2013 we now have an adoption fee!

Dogs & Puppies are $90, Cats & Kittens are $75 and all other companion animals are $25 unless stated differently.

Those fees include:

• Spay/Neuter

• Vaccinations & deworming (including Rabies shot)

• and Heartworm testing for dogs

The cost for this medical care at local veterinary offices would easily exceed $200.00.

An application must be filled out and approved before adopting one of our pets.
