Wow, give a dog time, patience and love and it is amazing to see what can happen. Oberon is full of affection, personality and he so sweet & gentle. He is a 2 year old Chihuahua mix and weighs a little over 15 pounds. You may want to read starting with the 3rd paragraph before continuing. This little boy is now a DOG! He plays, he steals toys, he wrestles, he sits, he talks, he runs around and loves to lay on the back deck in the sun like a dog. He is just awesome. Oberon was turned into the shelter with a bunch of other dogs that had to fend for themselves on a property in rural Georgia. I don't think he had much human interaction before coming to my home. He is a great dog in the home and in the yard, but struggles on walks. He has gotten so much better, but it will take time and patience for him to have the confidence to be ok when he hears loud noises and sees new people on walks. Oberon has met people in my home and if you let him approach on his time, you will get kisses and snuggles in no time.
I think Oberon would do best in a home with a fenced yard and a balanced dog that likes to play. He plays well with my dogs ranging from 14 pounds to 50 pounds. He does not need to be crated, he's never had an accident, only chews his bones & toys, and would love to sleep in bed with you but will sleep in his bed if you tell him to. I know that he would love a home where he can make up for lost time with snuggles. He would do great around kids, but I think he would struggle in a home that is too chaotic. Oberon is honestly one of the best dogs I have had in my home.
08/21/2016: Oberon is a 2 year old Chihuahua mix and weighs a little over 15 pounds. As the foster mom I usually write a cute write up told from the dogs point of view. I can't, it's too sad what he would tell me. He would tell me that he lived on a property with a bunch of other dogs and they all had to fend for themselves. He would tell me that he thinks he is safe, but he's not sure because he has never felt it.
Oberon was part of a rescue that Angels did in the 3rd week of August. Angels volunteers went to a rural shelter and saved 41 dogs that were going to be put down because of a parvo outbreak. Apparently he was brought to the shelter in a truck with a bunch of other dogs. He has not been abused physically by a human, but his emotional scars run deep. I don't know what type of home Oberon will need because right now I am focused on him building trust and learning what it is like to be a dog that is safe & loved. Day 1: He wouldn't come out of the crate, but lets me pick him and carry him outside. He is walked in the the fenced yard with a leash because he just wants to hide in a corner. Day 2: He comes out of the crate on his own and walks over to me for affection. I even got a little kiss. Maybe it was a thank you for giving him a warm bed and a full belly. Day 3: He takes a few steps out of his room on his own, but turns back quickly. Oberon is now able to be in the backyard with the leash dragging along. He is learning to smell the air and enjoy being safe. Day 4: He went up the back stairs on his own, but couldn't quite make it through the door. He met my pack through the baby gate and only shook a little and his tail was wagging. He came over to the gate and then laid down. That is huge for Oberon and we will let that be enough for a few days.
I am taking my time with Oberon as to not set him back with his progress. Everyday is a new day with him, and he is coming around quicker than I had expected. Hopefully I will have more progress to post in a few days!!
