Facts about River

  • Breed: German Shepherd Dog
  • Color: Black - With Tan, Yellow Or Fawn
  • Age: Young
  • Size: Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)
  • Sex: Male
River is a handsome young boy who was found as a stray in the Louisville metro area. The shelter estimated his age around 2 years old however we suspect River is closer to a year of age.

River is very friendly with everyone he meets however he is also very insecure in himself. Unfortunately this insecurity causes River to be very clingy with those he bonds with and without proper boundaries he will try to guard "his person" from others. This is behavior that has been caught and corrected early in his foster home however an adoptive home would need to be willing to do intensive socialization with proper boundaries to ensure that River doesn't continue to build bad behavior. Aside from this River is a very sweet, goofy, and loving dog. He wants desperately to have a job and a family. He still has a very puppy-like personality and playfulness to him.

River does extemely well with the other dogs. He is definitely more focused on people the majority of the time but with the right companions (those tenacious enough to convince him) he can be a very playful boy. He is still young so social cues aren't his strong suit but he learns quickly and takes a lot of cues from other dogs. He would likely benefit from having a good canine role model.

River is a very typical young german shepherd who has been left on his own. He is a lot of energy with little manners but a huge heart. This heart gets him in trouble at times but with an experienced home willing to provide the training neccessary River is going to be the most dedicated family dog.

About Tier Haven Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Tier Haven Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit animal rescue agency based in Louisville, KY that specializes in German Shepherds and similar working breeds. Tier Haven realizes that many German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) find themselves in shelters due to a lack of training and understanding of the breed. Tier Haven is a no-kill rescue which limits the number of dogs we can care for at any given time for this reason Tier Haven focuses on taking dogs from shelters that are in direct risk of euthanasia and has a separate policy for owner surrenders.

Surrender Policy

Tier Haven accepts owner surrenders on a conditional basis due to the large number of dogs in kill shelters. If you have a dog you would like to surrender you must email pictures and the reason for surrendering to Tier Haven does charge a fee for surrendering a dog; $80 for a fully vetted dog (vaccinations, alter, heartworm test) when vet records are provided and $150 for un-vetted dogs.

Our Adoption Process...

Tier Haven requires an adoption application to be completed and processed prior to meeting or adopting any of our dogs. As a completely foster based organization Tier Haven relies on the application to help ensure that adopters are only meeting dogs that are suitable for their household based on various factors. The application is completed via email and you may email us at to obtain an application. When submitting an application please contact your vet clinic and provide them with a release of information and also inform your personal references that they will be contacted.

Once your application is processed you will be contacted by a volunteer to discuss potential dogs and arrange a meet and greet. Since we are a foster based group we only allow up to three (3) dogs on each meet and greet to keep it manageable for everyone. Meet and greets are often held at public locations to respect the privacy of our foster homes and they are scheduled at the discretion of the foster homes.

Tier Haven charges an adoption fee of $250 for each dog. This includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, heart-worm test, micro-chip, and monthly preventative care while with our organization. All medical records are provided at the time of adoption along with an adoption contract.
