River is extremely overprotective of "his people" and is a hyper-emotional dog. He has now bounced 3 placements due to this which is impacting the way he presents himself of meet and greets. River is fostered with an experienced Shepherd handler who is able to manage him just fine. She maintains strict boundaries on what the dogs are allowed to do though in regards to protection. It is not tolerated for River to try to step up as protector of all in her home therefore she has no problems with him living with her children and having visitors over. River will require an experienced handler who is able to provide clear instructors for him though as River is very sensitive to his handler. When they are upset he is upset which escalates situations.
River has some tell-tell signs of extremely poor training. We suspect that he was put on either a shock or pinch collar or both at a young age which has caused this deep-rooted fear and insecurity in him. The first time River was given a ball to play with he ran halfway to it and then dropped to the ground like someone was going to beat him. River is going to require someone willing to manage him behaviors while doing advanced training to overcome his past. He will be a minimum of 3 months intense training but he is going to be an amazing companion to the person who is willing to invest in him.
River lives with other Shepherds without an issue. He is friendly and playful with the other dogs. They help him chill out in many aspects as he is able to follow their lead. River has not been around cats nor has he been around small dogs.
River is going to be a project dog and we recognize that not everyone has the time or skill to dedicate to a dog like him. River is a warm, friendly, cuddly, and goofy boy with those who he trusts though. He would walk through fire for his owner which is partial what gets him in trouble but in the right home will make him the best companion you have ever known. If you take the time to invest in River he will return it ten-fold.
