About Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption Inc.

About Our Rescue Group...

In metro Atlanta, dogs and cats of all ages and breeds are turned in at county-run Animal Control facilities, abandoned, neglected or abused every day.

Some dogs and cats are turned in to us by owners who no longer want them, or who can no longer care for them. Usually, though, most owners in this situation turn their pets over to the county-run Animal Control facilities, and there is a 70 percent chance the dog or cat will be euthanized. An owner surrendered older dog or and cat, or poorly-socialized purebreds, mixed breeds, and sick or injured dogs are usually euthanized immediately. The others might be put up for adoption, but with so many animals coming in each day, often there is no room to keep even the healthy, adoptable ones for very long in these shelters.

This is where Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption steps in. As a no-kill shelter, Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption does everything within its power to reduce the number of dogs and cats that are euthanized in metro Atlanta. We rescue most of our dogs and cats from area shelters and once rescued, they are vaccinated, treated for intestinal and external parasites and are spayed or neutered. Many of the dogs and cats require additional, expensive medical treatment such as treatment for heartworms, broken bones, mange and other curable (and preventable) diseases.

Then the work really begins.

Our amazingly loyal group of foster parents take some of them into their homes, and some stay with us at the shelter. Regardless of whether they have a foster home or not, they are fed, loved and cared for-- some for the first time in their lives. We also work with the dogs on basic training, e.g. obedience commands and behavioral problems such as separation anxiety, if needed. Eventually, every dog and every cat is placed in the kind of home where it will never again know the fear and pain it has lived with most, if not all, of its life.

In time, an amazing transformation occurs. Their emotional, physical and spiritual wounds heal. Scared dogs are transformed into healthy, playful, affectionate pets. Nervous, aloof cats become cuddly sweethearts. They learn to play. They learn to trust. They learn to live without fear or confusion. They become the pets they were meant to be and live the lives they were meant to live.

To date, we have rescued and placed over 14,000 dogs and cats in loving homes. Our goal is to eliminate all homeless and unwanted dogs and cats in metro Atlanta.

We are located at 4874 S Atlanta Rd. SE Smyrna GA 30080. We operate our shelter 15 hours per day, seven days a week. We are open to the public for adoptions Tuesday through Friday between the hours of 11am - 4pm, and on Saturday from 12pm - 5pm and Sunday from 1pm - 5 pm.. This move was necessary to meet the overwhelming demand for growth. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, our web site is updated several times daily with bios and pictures of our dogs and cats.

But we can't do it alone. Generous donations from kind people like you sustain us with the financial support necessary to care for these victims of selfishness and neglect. Volunteers willing to open their hearts and their homes to our rescues are also crucial to our continued success and future growth.

If you are interested in dedicating some of your free time or helping us meet the financial challenges for growth, please feel free to email us at

Instructions For Adopting an Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption Dog or Cat:

All household members, including current dog(s), are required to attend the adoption interview, and if you currently have pets in the household you must bring along a copy of their most current medical records with proof of vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and proof of spay/neuter.

All applicants must be 23 years of age and must complete an adoption application.

For the best selection of pets, please plan to arrive at our adoption center early and bring your patience. This is an important decision and sometimes it takes a while. We do not hold or reserve animals. You must come in person and be interviewed in person in order to adopt.

Complete the adoption application online and print. You can bring the printed application to the shelter for your in-person interview, or you can fill out an application in person at the shelter. If we have questions or concerns or need clarification on any of your responses, we will address them when you are at the shelter.

As part of the adoption process, you will be required to sign a contract promising to take care of your new pet, keep its vaccinations and heartworm preventative current, and return the pet to us if you choose not to keep it.

Our adoption fee varies depending on the breed and age of the pet. For most dogs it is $275, however some purebred dogs can be as much as $425, and our adoption fee for most cats is $125. If you have any questions about the adoption fee of the pet you are interested in, please email us. The adoption fees help us cover our rescue expenses and provide veterinary care for the animals.

The adoption fee includes spaying or neutering, heartworm test and rabies shot if the dog or cat is old enough, and routine vaccinations. Dogs over age 6 months are tested for heartworms; cats and kittens are tested for feline Leukemia and Aids. All are treated for fleas, ticks and intestinal parasites. Adoptions fees can be paid by cash, Visa or Mastercard. We do not take checks.
