Marvin is a one-year-old Basset/Beagle mix, rescued from the Moreno Valley Shelter. He is 32 lbs. and mixed with an unknown breed. We guessed some type of sheltie or collie breed as his coat is longer than a hound dog’s coat would be. Marvin has the long body and turned out front paws of a Bassett, the ears and tri-color of a Beagle, with the longer coat and wispy hairs of another breed.
Marvin is just about the happiest dog I have seen in a long time. Breathing air brings him joy. He is a very playful dog who longs to have another dog that will engage with him in interactive play. He is very a friendly, totally non-aggressive dog that loves all people, all dogs, and in short, is a bit of a goofball. Marvin is just a big old puppy. He can get overstimulated if things are new and fresh, can occasionally whine a bit like most puppies do, but can also settle down once the thrill is gone or if there is not much activity going on. Marvin has had little training so whomever adopts him is encouraged to provide him with a simple Pet-smart or Petco training class to provide him with a bit of structure, as well as provide him with some training reinforcement in the day to day. Though he occasionally goes off to a pet bed to enjoy a rawhide chew, Marvin still looks to the humans and other dogs for outside stimulation. If there is no other playful dog in the home, he needs to be placed with people who enjoy doing things with their dog as part of their lifestyle. Examples of this would be walking, hiking, going to the dog park, going for car rides to run errands, basically being included in family outings. It is NOT that Marvin is hyper or athletic, but he is not the type of dog that will relish in lying around the house all of the time. He wants to engage life. (However, another playful dog in the home will lessen the need for Marvin to do things with his humans.)
Marvin is doing well in his potty training, but I facilitate taking him outside to reinforce this. He is crate-trained and sleeps in an appropriate sized wire crate at night. Marvin eats in the crate, sleeps in the crate (though he prefers to have his crate placed near me in the bedroom) and stays in his crate if I have to leave the house for a few hours. Marvin is not a barker though he occasionally barks from excitement. I have not seen him destroy or dig. Once Marvin settles in somewhere and has been provided with some of the necessary tools, he has all the makings of being a wonderful addition to a home or family because of his happy and friendly, loving and affectionate inherent nature.
The best fit for Marvin would be a home with a yard to run around in (all adopted dogs MUST BE primarily indoor dogs with outdoor access at will, or for recreation or potty. They cannot be excluded to the outdoors), as well as another welcoming and friendly canine companion who LOVES to play interactively with other dogs. This is what Marvin longs for. He can also be placed in a home with children who will enjoy playing with their dog. So far, he does not know how to chase balls or toys and bring them back to you, but I know that he would very much enjoy the fun, running and romping around the yard, and the love and attention that kids would bring. Note: If Marvin is to be placed in a home with younger children, he will still need to be provided with some structure and boundaries by way of the adults in the home. Finally, Marvin can be placed in a home with no kids or no other dog, but one whereby the people enjoy taking their dog with them on a regular basis to dog park as well as other outings.
