Facts about Cuddles

  • Breed: Shih Tzu
  • Color: White - With Black
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less
  • Sex: Female
Cuddles arrived at the Safehouse on 07/07/2016 and in spite of her horrid condition, this absolutely darling girl was wagging her little tail and her precious eyes looked at us with heart wrenching love. Picked up as a stray by animal control, we have no history, but maybe that is just as well given her condition and her reluctance to stay inside. Severely neglected and insecure, this little dog must have been forced to spend her life outdoors; the condition of her health and her skin evidence of the horror she was made to endure. Her entire underside, from chin to tail, was nothing but hairless raw red skin covered with sores, scabs and papules, with ugly scale on her legs and paws. Diagnosed with a rare Malassezia yeast infection and several nasty varieties of bacteria; her ears swollen shut with MRSP (a “superbug”) and purulent discharge and her eyes clouded over with neglect. My arms ached to hold her close and comfort her, to stroke her back and help her to understand that she was finally safe, but there is nowhere to touch her without causing discomfort. Your heart will break when you see how loving she is, how much she wants to please, how quiet and accepting she is in spite of all she has had to endure. Watch her wrestle with her silly fuzzy red tomato faced pillow and you’ll smile at her playfulness. Cuddles is an adult Shih Tzu, probably born around 2011. She weighs 15 pounds with a lovely white and black coat. We treated her with lots of love, soothing baths, medications, good nourishing food and immune strengthening supplements. Progress was slow but overall, Cuddles is now doing very well with no evidence of infections. She has been spayed, microchipped, is current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative.

Unfortunately, both her ear canals have masses arising from the ear canal wall. We cannot determine the nature of the masses -- these could be benign cysts or potentially cancerous tumors. As long as the masses remain in her ear canals, Cuddles will be predisposed to ear infections. Although Cuddles’ treatment has been expensive, to this point the shelter has been able to cover the costs. Unfortunately, she is now in need of specialized total ear canal ablation surgery. This surgery is usually curative and eliminates future infections. The estimated maximum cost is an overwhelming $6,000, which is way more than our little shelter can take on alone.

Part of our mission is to provide loving adoptable dogs with serious medical issues, whom others have given up on, a fair chance at a happy life with good health. PLEASE help us give this gentle, loving, wonderful little dog a second chance at life and a loving home. Six months ago we rescued Cuddles from the streets of Chicago, and now we need to save her again. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and hers for your donation ( and for sharing this page with your friends.

About Shih Tzu Rescue, Adoption & Education Safehouse (S.T.R.A.E.S.)

About Our Shelter...

Shih Tzu Rescue, Adoption and Education Safehouse (S.T.R.A.E.S.) is an all volunteer, not for profit, no-kill, licensed shelter, established in 1999 to provide sanctuary, loving care and an adoption program for abandoned and relinquished Shih Tzu. Our mission also includes two special programs. (1) Adoptable dogs with injuries and medical ailments that are costly to treat and who would otherwise be scheduled to die are given the extra-ordinary medical care and lengthy rehabilitation they need to live happy complete lives. (2) Neglected and abused dogs with behavior issues ranging from aggression to fear that have the potential to become loving family members are enrolled in a remedial program with a professional trainer/behaviorist so they too can be successfully placed in “forever homes.” All dogs are kept in a home-like environment with access to over two fenced-in acres where they can run free. Our Shih Tzu are spayed/neutered prior to adoption, current on annual inoculations and heartworm preventative and have an AVID microchip implant. Complete veterinarian wellness checks are done on all incoming pets and any necessary special tests, medical and/or surgical procedures are provided. Regularly scheduled grooming, parasite checks and treatment are also included as a part of our routine care. All dogs are temperament and personality tested so adopters can be matched with a dog that will best suit their expectations and lifestyle.
Our rescue group is very knowledgeable about the breed characteristics and specific care requirements of the Shih Tzu. Post adoption assistance is provided to help the adopted pet and caregiver through the transition period. We provide breed specific and general educational materials as well as consultation and training services for current and potential pet guardians. We will work with Shih Tzu owners considering giving up their pets, offering alternatives, education and assistance in an effort to help keep the Shih Tzu in it’s current home.

Come Meet Our Pets...

In 2017, we are scheduled to show our available dogs at the PETsMART store in Crestwood, IL (4975 Cal Sag Rd.) on the first and second Saturdays of every month between 10:30am & 2pm. Schedule changes will be posted on our Facebook and our Petfinder home page.
