Facts about Cuddles

  • Breed: Shih Tzu
  • Color: White - With Black
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less
  • Sex: Female
We named her Cuddles because she is the sweetest cuddliest little female Shih Tzu you can imagine!!. Cuddles arrived at the Safehouse on 07/07/2016 and in spite of her horrid condition, this absolutely darling girl was wagging her little tail and her precious eyes looked at us with heart wrenching love. Picked up as a stray by animal control, we have no history, but maybe that is just as well given her condition and her reluctance to stay inside. Severely neglected and insecure, this little dog must have been forced to spend her life outside and now she thinks that is where she belongs. Cuddles spends most of her time outside, she will sit there, rain, shine, hot, cold, just sit or lie outside refusing the comfort, cleanliness and love now waiting inside. Very hesitant when called to come in, even when it is time to eat; she will bolt out any opened door, not to run away, she is always close by, but apparently she thinks she is not welcome indoors. The condition of her health and her skin is evidence of the horror she was made to endure. Her entire underside, from chin to tail, is nothing but hairless skin covered with sores, scabs and papules, with ugly scale on her legs and paws. My arms ached to hold her close and comfort her, to stroke her back and help her to understand that she is safe now, but there is nowhere to touch her without causing discomfort. Diagnosed with a rare Malassezia yeast infection and several nasty varieties of bacteria; her ears swollen shut with infection and purulent discharge and her eyes clouded over with neglect. Your heart will break when you see how loving she is, how much she wants to please, how quiet and accepting she is in spite of all she must endure. Watch her wrestle with her silly fuzzy red tomato faced pillow and you’ll smile at her playfulness. Cuddles is an adult Shih Tzu, probably born around 2010. She weighs 15 pounds and what little coat she has is white and black. We are treating her with lots of love, soothing baths, medications, good nourishing food and immune strengthening supplements. Progress is slow and she has a long recovery road ahead but her future as a normal happy beloved pet has already begun. Cuddles is spayed, microchipped, current on all vaccines, heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and she has had a complete physical and dental. Her adoption fee is $200.

About Shih Tzu Rescue, Adoption & Education Safehouse (S.T.R.A.E.S.)

About Our Shelter...

Shih Tzu Rescue, Adoption and Education Safehouse (S.T.R.A.E.S.) is an all volunteer, not for profit, no-kill, licensed shelter, established in 1999 to provide sanctuary, loving care and an adoption program for abandoned and relinquished Shih Tzu. Our mission also includes two special programs. (1) Adoptable dogs with injuries and medical ailments that are costly to treat and who would otherwise be scheduled to die are given the extra-ordinary medical care and lengthy rehabilitation they need to live happy complete lives. (2) Neglected and abused dogs with behavior issues ranging from aggression to fear that have the potential to become loving family members are enrolled in a remedial program with a professional trainer/behaviorist so they too can be successfully placed in “forever homes.” All dogs are kept in a home-like environment with access to over two fenced-in acres where they can run free. Our Shih Tzu are spayed/neutered prior to adoption, current on annual inoculations and heartworm preventative and have an AVID microchip implant. Complete veterinarian wellness checks are done on all incoming pets and any necessary special tests, medical and/or surgical procedures are provided. Regularly scheduled grooming, parasite checks and treatment are also included as a part of our routine care. All dogs are temperament and personality tested so adopters can be matched with a dog that will best suit their expectations and lifestyle.
Our rescue group is very knowledgeable about the breed characteristics and specific care requirements of the Shih Tzu. Post adoption assistance is provided to help the adopted pet and caregiver through the transition period. We provide breed specific and general educational materials as well as consultation and training services for current and potential pet guardians. We will work with Shih Tzu owners considering giving up their pets, offering alternatives, education and assistance in an effort to help keep the Shih Tzu in it’s current home.
