Facts about Bruce

  • Breed: Chow Chow/Labrador Retriever Mix
  • Color: Red/Golden/Orange/Chestnut
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)
  • Sex: Male
Bruce is a 4 year old male Lab/Chow mix of about 80 lbs with a medium energy and even temperament. He would prefer a home where he is the only dog or with other dogs who are also mellow and playful and easy to get along with. He will not do well with terriers or confrontative dogs. We don't know how he is with small dogs. He is pretty much a turnkey dog who loves people. We would like someone who has had Chow experience.

Bruce is a happy, playful, funloving boy who enjoys being active. He is a medium energy dog who can hike with you or chill with you. He loves going for car rides and putting his head out the window, empty water jugs he can toss in the air and catch, wading in a doggie pool and being sprayed with a hose. He is quite the goofball to watch and will keep you endlessly entertained. He is house trained and house socialized with no bad habits. He would love to be part of a family where he can enjoy the activities of family life. He is very smart and highly trainable and can learn all kinds tricks. He knows his basic commands, sit, down and wait and walks well on leash. We have no experience with him with younger children and prefer a family with children over 13.

If you are interested in meeting Bruce please complete an adoption or foster application on our website below. You will also find our available dogs on both our webpage and Facebook page below.

The adoption donation for most healthy adult dogs is $300. Special consideration is given to senior and special needs dogs. This amount only partially covers the cost of vet care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible. All dogs will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and be current on vaccinations. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis.

At Happy Hearts our primary mission is to save 11th hour dogs from being euthanized. We rescue our dogs from high kill shelters, rehabilitate them, and place them in loving forever homes. We work with fosters and trainers to facilitate the dogs rebuilding trust and learning appropriate behavior so that they can function well in their new forever home. Fosters who generously open their homes and hearts to dogs desperate for love and support are the foundation of everything we do. In foster homes dogs learn good doggie manners and recover from the loss of their previous families as well as other negative experiences. We are foster based so that dogs can be given the time and attention they need to recover from horrific experiences. We utilize boarding to remove a dog from a shelter when it has 24 hours or less to live and no other rescue interest. Occasionally dogs with more serious behavioral problems will need extensive training and rehab and can only go to experienced fosters.

BOARDING
On some occasions we board dogs in order to save them at the last moment, or when a foster has had a situation change, and they need a place to go. Although this is our last resort option, it is a regular occurrence since there are not enough fosters available to help all the dogs in need. However the kennel facility we use is close, and we are able to visit our dogs daily, so they get exercise, attention and training. We have a few wonderful trainers who help us deal with behavioral issues (from mild to severe) which is often the reason they have been given up in the first place. Thank you to our primary trainer, Alex Gant, for her many hours of work! (http://resultswithbehave.com).

Donate to Our Rescue Group...
Sponsors who are able to help support a dog through it’s stay at Happy Hearts make what we do possible. Boarding expenses, food, medical care, and necessary equipment from collars to chew toys are all very costly and help from those who share our vision and support us enables us to continue our work. We also take in many senior dogs that have high medical expenses and it is only though the generosity of sponsors and other donors that we can continue to do this.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Most of our dogs are in the greater San Diego area although we have a few located throughout Southern California. An adoption application must be completed first and then a home visit is done. Appointments to see a dog need to be made so we can be available. Please check our Facebook page at:

Our Adoption Process...

Our healthy adult dogs are $300 which includes neutering, all shots and microchip as well as addressing any medical issues which are apparent at the time. We normally do a two week foster to adopt. The potential adopter first visits the dog to determine if they have a connection and want to pursue the adoption process. Then the dog and it's foster visit with the adopter in their home several times until it is apparent that the dog is bonding and is comfortable and ready to make the move. A trainer is available for all dogs as needed. A contract is signed and the a donation made. The adopter agrees to return the dog to Happy Hearts if for any reason and at any time the dog must be relinquished. A refund is given only during the initial two week foster to adopt. After the first two weeks no refund can be given. All donations are tax deductible
