My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Wilbur is a sweet senior beagle that needs to find a new home!! He is approx. 9 years old and weighs 26 lbs. This is Wilber’s rescue story as told by his foster mom:

“Wilber was picked up as a stray on a rural road in South Carolina and taken to the local animal shelter on a day where temperatures were 100-plus degrees. He was emaciated, overheated, and barely able to stand. He couldn’t lift his head or wag his tail. Some of his nails had grown around into the pads of his feet while other nails were broken off completely. The pads of his feet were raw – probably from walking the hot asphalt roads so long in search of food or help. He was missing areas of hair on his body and his ears were mottled with fly bites. There seemed little hope for this poor boy in the high kill shelter. Penny Angels heard of Wilber’s plight and decided that he would not die alone in the shelter. Wilber was picked up by a volunteer and taken to a nearby vet. Xrays showed that Wilber had a back injury, among other things. A medical plan was created and Wilber came to our foster home where he began his recovery before heading to Penny Angels in New Jersey.

“Wilber is a sweet and gentle soul. He loves everybody, and everybody (human and canine) loves him! He wags his tail and looks at you with his little under bite of a grin. You can’t help but reach down and rub that sweet boy on his head or under his chin. It doesn’t take much to make Wilber happy. He sleeps quietly on one of the many dog beds in our room. Wilber is an early riser and gets up shortly after the sun and likes to go outside and take care of his business. Yes, he is housebroken. One of the sweetest moments with Wilber is after he comes back inside in the morning. He likes to be picked up and spoon with you in the bed. Then he eases off to sleep and snores gently in your arms. Sometimes he will wake up to re-position himself and put a lick on your nose before he goes back to sleep.

“Because of Wilber’s back injury, he can’t jump up on the furniture and sometimes has difficulty coming up stairs. We just scoop him up in our arms (you may hear some soft grunts) and place him gently on the bed or the floor. Also because of his back, I think it would be a good idea for Wilber to have a home with dogs closer to his size and temperament so that he isn’t injured while playing. He does fine with our lab but she is a senior girl and doesn’t play much. He is usually curled up with his beagle foster brothers and sisters.

“Wilber likes to go for short strolls on a leash while catching the scents in the air. You rarely hear him bark, though. Off leash in the fenced yard, he stays close to your side and will sit beside you when you stop. He looks up at you and wags his tail, and your heart melts into a thousand pieces.

“Wilber truly is a wonderful dog and I think he has some good years ahead of him. He is so loving and gentle and asks for so little in return. We send him to Penny Angels with much love and gratitude for giving us this time with this very special boy. Please consider this senior boy as part of your family. I think you will be as greatly blessed by him as we have been.”

Wilber will be at Petsmart in Mays Landing, NJ on Saturday from 11- 3 pm if you are interested in meeting him.
