Meet Godiva, or Diva as she’s affectionately known! She is a purebred GSD (don’t even ask if she’s a Xolo…she’s not) and was born May 20, 2016. Diva was born with congenital hypotrichosis/follicular aplasia. What this means is that she was born with almost no hair follicles, so her skin is very sensitive. Since the few hair follicles she does have tend to get clogged, she must be bathed once a week with special shampoo to avoid infection. Also, if her skin gets dry, special (hypoallergenic) lotion must be applied twice daily. And yes, she sheds dander, so don’t get the impression that she is hypoallergenic…she’s not! Godiva must be protected from prolonged sun exposure since she has no hair to protect her skin from sunburn (i.e shaded windows on long car rides), and if she is outside for an extended period of time, special sunscreen must be applied to her skin. Also, having no fur makes it hard for her body to regulate her temperature, so she must also be protected from cold weather as well. We basically treat her like a newborn baby! Godiva has been spayed and already had her dental work done! Now that the info about how high-maintenance she is out of the way, let me tell you how awesome she is! She is bombproof and loves everyone. And she loves other animals, large and small, and we prefer that she be adopted by someone with at least one other dog (who isn’t going to be too rough with her). She is like a GSD in every way…smart, energetic and occasionally stubborn! She loves to snuggle and play. She is crate-trained and house-trained. She will get as large as a normal GSD female and will need obedience training, just like a normal GSD. If you are only interested in the “novelty” of having a bald dog, you’re not the adopter for Diva. Priority will be given to potential adopters with experience in taking care of hairless pets. And of course, GSD experience is a plus as well. If you are interested in making Godiva part of your family and are in our adoption territory of VA, NC or MD, approved adopters can contact your coordinator or you can complete an application at our website, www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com (be sure to read the FAQ section). Godiva is being fostered in Chesapeake, VA.
Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact email@example.com .
