Zeus is a medium-haired Chihuahua (estimated 8-10 years old) who lost his home when his elderly owner passed away. Sadly, the extended family chose not to keep him, and he found himself alone at Pima Animal Care Center. As a result of his mom's death, he was also separated from his litter mate and life-long companion, who the family chose to keep. He was sad and confused at PACC but caught the eye of volunteers and is now happily thriving in a foster home. During a teeth cleaning (with 3 extractions) at PACC, it was discovered that he has a heart murmur and a slightly enlarged heart, which has resulted in the displacement of his trachea. He was quite possibly born this way. He sometimes grunts and coughs a little, but he is now taking the heart medication that he needs to remain healthy and active. Although he will need to remain on these for the rest of his life (ca. $50/month), the vet describes his heart murmur as mild and his overall condition as very good, including excellent bloodwork! He enjoys going for car rides, taking walks, walks great on a leash, gets along with other small dogs his size, and loves to cuddle with plush toys. He has not been cat-tested. He loves to curl up on your lap and follow you everywhere, and enjoys burrowing under the covers at night. He is house-trained and has learned to use a dog door. We are working on some minor resource guarding issues (did I mention he loves his plush toys?!), so it is recommended that Zeus's family not have children under 10, and not have larger dominant dogs who could hurt him. He would do best in a quiet to moderately active home with a human companion who can help mend his broken heart and where he can enjoy his remaining years in peace with the love and attention he deserves. He weighs 9.5 pounds but the vet recommends he lose another pound :-)
