Facts about GIZMO

  • Breed: Chihuahua
  • Color: Tricolor (Tan/Brown & Black & White)
  • Age: Senior
  • Size: Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less
  • Sex: Male
We’re told that little “Gizmo” was supposed to be a teacup Chihuahua, but the only thing teacup about him ended up to be his feet! J The rest of him is standard size. He weighs about 6# and is as cute as a button with his little apple head and in his tri-color short coat. “Gizmo’s” temperament is, shall we say, a bit tempermental. At 10 years young, he’s in excellent health, but his sensitivity is probably not going to change, so we want him to go to an adult-only home; someone with experience and understanding of how to be his leader. For completely unexplained reasons he will screech when touched in certain places, yet we’re quite confident he is in absolutely no discomfort. It’s a little startling at first, but you get used to it. He’s great on-leash and prances like a little prince. He gets along with other dogs of all sizes and even cats! “Gizmo’s” neutered, UTD on vaccinations, heartworm negative and microchipped; also housetrained and crate-trained, although he won’t eat in a crate. Loves to snuggle in a little bed with a blanket. Submit your application from www.animalserviceleague.org .

About Animal Service League, Inc.

About Our Rescue Group...

Animal Service League is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) rescue/foster organization first begun in 1988. It was not until 1995 that the organization began to focus efforts toward rescuing dogs and cats, rehoming them into loving "forever homes." Most of our rescues have come from kill shelters across the state, although some are also owner releases. All the foster animals are kept in one location and afforded accommodations similar to those in a "normal" home environment. All basic vet work is done before any pet is adopted out (spay/neuter, health tests, vaccinations and microchipping), and we also provided other vet services that may be needed for an individual pet, such as dental work, corrective surgeries or heartworm treatment. As a non-profit organization, we must rely on the generosity and support of the public through adoption fees and direct donations. Animal Service League also provides a low-cost "Spay/Neuter Certificate Program" whereby pet owners can get their dogs or cats spayed or neutered for a nominal fee through our cooperating vet clinic. Other services may be available at discount as well, determined on an individual need basis. We strive to provide the best care for our fosters and to the community by educating the public in responsible pet care and to help get every dog and cat in our area spayed and neutered in an effort to curb the pet overpopulation problem and promote higher standards of pet health.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We show our fosters by appointment only but strive to offer convenience to our potential adopters with availability 7 days a week. Best times to call are between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. daily. Directions will be provided at that time. We are conveniently located only two miles from Dowagiac,MI, in the SW corner of the state, approximately 2 hours east of Chicago or 3 hours west of Detroit. Owing to a lack of volunteer help, we do not currently participate in off-premises adoption events.

Our Adoption Process...

Our adoption process consists of an on-line application, available on our website, www.animalserviceleague.org, included in which we will ask for both veterinary and personal references as well as general pet-related information. Applications submitted will be acknowledged promptly, and references processed as quickly as possible. We do in-home visits for applicants living within one hour's drive from Dowagiac and require home photos from "long-distance" applicants, which are described in our acknowledgement. Upon preliminary approval of the application, an appointment is scheduled for the applicant to come meet the pet. It is highly likely that the adoption can be concluded at this meeting, and that you can take your new "fur kid" home that very day! Adoption fees are: $195 for all purebred puppies and adult dogs; $145 for mixed breeds. "Senior" dogs (age 8 and up for large breeds and age 10 and up for small breeds) are discounted 25%. There are also discounted fees for senior adopters (25%) and in-county (Cass County, MI) adopters.
