What is a Mischievous Mutt???
The Mischievous Mutt program is HSU''s initiative to successfully place dogs with some behavioral challenges. This program allows us to place these dogs for adoption although they may require a little extra training & patience to help them become the best canine companions they can be. They are not bad dogs but need a special type of family to ensure they will thrive in their new home.
What makes this dog a Mischievous Mutt?
Quirky, unique, & sure to make a lasting impression, this is Petey. While Petey likes other dogs, he is insecure with new dogs at first & as a result he can be a bit defensive around them. Because of this, he will need just the right canine companion to ensure his success. He will be able to live with some dogs, but not all. A well socialized doggie pal will best fit his needs. He needs a family dedicated to helping him respond appropriately when he is afraid of something. This, paired with a mature household with no small kids would be Petey''s perfect combination!
What is recommended to make this adoption successful?
Formal training is strongly recommended. There are many trainers to choose from. We recommend doing your homework to find a trainer who uses science-based positive training methods & has previous experience training dogs with similar behaviors as the dog you''re adopting. We work closely with a certified animal trainer & highly recommend her services. Any animal adopted from HSU will receive a 25% discount on any services offered. Ample mental stimulation (training) & exercise daily are a must. Petey is an active boy & will require an active family to best fit his needs. Knowledge of the breed is a must.
ALL Mischievous Mutt adoptions are finalized by our behavior department. This is done to help you & Petey succeed. If a behavior staff member is not available, the adoptions staff can assist you in making an appointment. (This is typically the case on Sundays.) If you have another dog at home, you will need to bring them in for an introduction. We will assist you in introducing them & provide feedback based on their interactions.
If you find you are in need of additional support at any time after adoption, please contact us for advice or other resources. You can email our behavior staff at email@example.com or call 801-506-2417. Please provide your name, the dog''s name & as much detail as possible.
