My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Elvira is a 3 year old cocker spaniel who spent her whole life in a cage being used for breeding. She had eye infections and bilateral cherry eyes which are being surgically repaired. Like most mill dogs she is timid but sweet natured and more comfortable around other dogs, so is looking for a calmer adult home with another doggie friend to help her adjust to life in a real home. Please email njwoof@cs.com if you are interested.

ABOUT OUR PUPPYMILL RESCUES:
We at Second Chance Pet Adoption League have welcomed 6 new little puppy mill survivors into our rescue, saved after a life in wire cages breeding litter after litter. Thanks to our friends at No More Tears Rescue-Puppymill Dog Rescue for getting them to safety and our amazing volunteer Ken for making the trek to Lancaster, PA once again to get them to us!
These dogs have likely produced thousands of dollars worth of puppies over the years for their Amish mill owners, but not a penny of that has gone toward their care, and they were lucky to escape with their lives and get to safety with us. We brought them straight to our great veterinarians at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains where for the first time in their lives they will be getting proper medical care. As usual after a life of neglect, a number of physical ailments were immediately obvious in many of the dogs: ear infections, eye infections, dirty matter coats, long nails, rotting teeth, foot pad infections from standing on dirty feces and urine covered wire. Two of the cocker spaniel have bilateral "cherry eyes" (congenital condition in which the third eyelid gland pops out and needs to be surgically tacked down). Emma the little peke has a HUGE inguinal hernia which could potentially have become life threatening if not surgically repaired if vital organs become tangled in it. Sweet Emily the tiny cavalier is only 5 years old and has a grade 5/6 heart murmur which requires an ultrasound for further diagnosis.
The emotional neglect these dogs have endured is horrific as well- they have never had clean bedding, run in the grass, walked on a leash, or been loved. They were simply breeding machines, a cash crop in the lucrative business that is standard practice in Amish mills. And despite their many congenital defects they were bred over and over, producing litters or pups doomed to eventually suffer from many of the same ailments after being purchased in pet stores by unsuspecting customers.

Caring for these dogs and preparing them to finally be able to live out their lives in the loving homes they deserve is very rewarding, but very expensive. We can't continue to help dogs like these, in additioned to the many abandoned, unwanted, or abused dogs we pull from our local overcrowded shelters each week. Please share and donate toward their medical bills, which will likely be over $5000 for just these 6 dogs.

Most importantly, please share these dogs' stories and NEVER BUY A PUPPY FROM A PET STORE!!! No matter what claims the pet store may make, no "reputable breeder" would ever allow their puppies to be sold in pet stores, and ALL pet store puppies come from places like where these 6 were saved from. All their parents are still left behind suffering in these perfectly legal "USDA licensed breeding facilities" aka puppy mills as long as people keep buying their puppies. The only way to help them is to stop the demand...don't shop, ADOPT!
Emma, Emily, Erlene, Elvira, Elizabeth, and Erika thank you for your support and spreading their message.

We do not have a shelter- all our pets are in foster homes and can be seen by appointment only during the week, or at our weekly pet adoptions every Sunday at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains from 12:30 to 3PM at 3009 Route 10 East next to 5 Star Car Wash (formerly Boulder Car Wash) in Morris Plains (Denville on GPS). To help us better match a pet to your household, we request you fill out an application on our homepage www.secondchance.petfinder.com and copy and paste it into an email, or print it and bring it to our adoption day when you come. Local inquiries only please- we do not do long distance adoptions.
