Cheif is a gorgeous, young, male Pitbull who has not had the opportunity to become the best dog he can be. He is very stressed in his kennel here and needs a person who wants a dog that wants to please. Cheif will not be content to sit around all day and maybe be taught how to sit, he wants to learn and be given direction. With proper instruction this dog will be an amazing companion for someone.

Many dogs who are high anxiety here at the shelter are simply dogs that are higher energy and higher drive. They need to exercise and feel like they've accomplished something to be happy and calm. This doesn't necessarily mean doing agility or other dogs sports (though those are great options!), but can be as simple as taking a dog through basic obedience and working on a new trick every couple of weeks.

Cheif is a medium to high energy dog that will need daily walks, runs, or swims. Behaviorally he has no food aggression, toy aggression, or problems with people. He is NO CATS and no small dogs. He does currently get humpy with other dogs and can exhibit growly dominance. Our on staff behaviorist will be happy to talk to you about proper socialization before taking him home though. Dog on dog aggression, nervousness, and reactivity can all be worked through!

About Our Shelter...

Come Meet Our Pets...

Adoption hours: Wed. - Friday, 1- 7 p.m.; Saturday, 12 - 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 - 4 pm. The shelter is located in 1600 Chamberlayne Avenue, Richmond, VA 23222.

Our Adoption Process...

Adopters are required to complete a written adoption application and meet with our adoption placement coordinator. Adoption fees cover the cost to spay/neuter, vaccinate, micro-chip and test for heart worms (dogs) and FIV/FELV (cats). Our adoption phone number is 804-646-5575.

Those interested in adopting an animal from RAC&C must visit our shelter in person to meet and interact with the animals. Once a selection is made, the prospective adopter completes a two-page written application. The application is immediately reviewed by staff and will be approved on the spot unless the adoption staff feels this adopter and animal are not a suitable match. If the adoption is approved, the adopter pays the pet's adoption fee. If the animal is spayed/neutered and current on vaccinations, the pet may go home on the spot! If the animal is not spayed, our staff makes arrangements for the pet to be spayed/neutered at a local vet clinic. The adopter picks the pet up at RAC&C after the pet's surgery. Appointments are made quickly, and the adopter usually has the pet within a few days.
Adoption fee - $100
Cats and kittens may be adopted two for the price of one!
Pets age 9 years and older may be adopted for no fee with an approved application.

All City of Richmond, VA residents are legally required to purchase an annual $10.00 license for each pet owned.
