UPDATE:  Heidi has now been released and she is ready to find her forever home.  The surgeon is very pleased with her recovery following back surgery and she is back running around in the backyard.

On Monday, September 5th we received an urgent email from a vet at an Austin Emergency Animal Hospital. They had just had a 90 year old lady surrender her 7 year old doxie as the dog had gone down in her back on Sunday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. The owner had asked that Heidi be put to sleep as she could not afford the surgery nor did she have the extra money for a wheelchair for Heidi. Heidi still had deep pain and the prognosis was good if she could get th e needed surgery. Our Intake Coordinator went and picked up this little girl and got her to the Specialty Hospital that CTDR uses for our back surgeries. Heidi did go into surgery late that night and is doing very well and the first report this morning was that she had already taken a few steps. As you all know, the costs of these back surgeries is pretty expensive. The cost for Heidi's lifesaving surgery is close to $3000.00. If you would like to help with making a donation towards Heidi's surgery, please go to our website at and you will see our Pay Pal button for the donation process. Without CTDR agreeing to take Heidi and letting her have this surgery, this young and beautiful girl would have been put to sleep. Please help CTDR help Heidi!  Heidi will be available for adoption towards the middle of October.

About Central Texas Dachshund Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Central Texas Dachshund Rescue is a volunteer organization whose main purpose is to rescue homeless Dachshunds and find them permanent, loving homes. We began rescuing Dachshunds in September of 2000 and our membership has grown yearly. In September of 2001 we incorporated and we received 501(c)3 status in February 2003. And, despite our name, we are no longer only in Central Texas, but have members and volunteers throughout the state of Texas and beyond.

All dogs that come through Central Texas Dachshund Rescue have been fully vetted before adoption. This includes a health exam by a veterinarian, the vaccinations appropriate for its age, and a heartworm test and preventative. All dogs are spayed or neutered before being adopted. Dogs too young to be spay or neutered are adopted under the agreement that they will be spayed or neutered at the appropriate time. We also provide dental treatment or other surgical treatments as necessary. The average cost of vetting our dogs is in the hundreds of dollars.

Our network of foster families provide safe and secure temporary homes, good nutrition, medical care, and socialization skills for our fosters. We always welcome new volunteers so if you would like to find out more about how you can help CTDR, please visit our website at:

Come Meet Our Pets...

Unlike a shelter or humane society, our dogs are not in one central location, but spread throughout many foster homes across the state. We realize that this makes it difficult to 'come meet our dogs,' but we believe the one-on-one care our dachshunds receive is well worth the inconvenience.

We will work with you to schedule a meet and greet with one or more of our dogs that are determined to be a good match for you and your family.

Our Adoption Process...

Adoption Fee:

On average, we spend $296 in vet expenses on each dog that we take in. To help us cover those expenses, on November 1, 2004 our adoption fee will increase to $250, and puppies under 1 year of age will be $300.

1.) Complete our online ADOPTION APPLICATION at ( and list the names of all the dogs you're interested in. If you don't currently see a dog that matches your family, please tell us more about what you're looking for. We have new dogs weekly and will contact you if a dog comes in that meets your requirements. Don't forget to list the name and number of your current veterinarian and landlord, if applicable! We will contact your current vet, landlord and personal references, if needed.

2.) After we receive your application, we'll contact you to discuss the specifics of what you're looking for. We will try to contact you within 3-7 days, but we are all volunteers and have full time jobs, so be patient with us!

3.) Once we have completed all reference checks, we will schedule a home visit where someone from our organization will come to your home and meet you and your family and any pets you currently have.

4.) Finally, we will schedule a time when your family and pet(s) can meet your desired rescue dachshund. If a long transport is involved, we ask the potential adopter to arrange the transportation of the dog.
