For reasons we cannot imagine, pretty and petite Carole found herself at the Mobile County Shelter in AL. This tender soul was in a very scary and dangerous situation - not being a bouncy, bundle-of-fluff puppy and being black in coloring, the color least adopted, Carole's life was in danger. The shelter held her even beyond the usual "hold time" for a stray, feeling certain her owner would come and claim her. When that did not occur, her advocate at the shelter contacted our rescue to take her in and we were happy to oblige.
Carole is a sweetly mannered dog with a lovely disposition, estimated to be about 2-3 years old. She is a beautiful black retriever mix, or as our rescue affectionately says, a "black golden!" Our black beauty has never met a stranger and will greet you with a look that seems to say "Hi, I’m Carole – so nice to meet you!" She met the staff at the vet's office with a wagging tail, as though she had known them all of her life. When brought back to the kennel area, she went over to each dog's kennel to greet them and attempted to engage them in play.
Carole arrived at the shelter already spayed and she tested negative for heartworm. We are certain she was someone's companion in her previous life. She is the most loving girl you will ever meet, and the most wonderful thing about Carole is her heart and spirit. You can tell when you meet her that she just longs to belong. Carole, weighing in at about 35 pounds, has been brought up-to-date on vaccinations and has been micro-chipped. She will be ready to travel north to her forever home in late September.

Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.
You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
