Barney came to Ruff Start Rescue from a shelter down south. He and another little shih-tzu mix were found as strays and were extremely matted and in bad shape. The shelter took them in and was able to get them shaved down and feeling 100 times better instantly. They think they had not been groomed in well over a year or more. After all of the matting was removed and a vet was able to examine Barney, it was found that Barney is blind in one eye and he has a cataract building in the other, so he has limited vision. He is able to get around his foster home fairly well, we think he can at least see shadows if not a bit more than that. He currently is carried up and down the stairs so we can insure his safety, and he stumbles going in and out to go potty because there is a little lip on that door there. He does tend to always go to the door and wait on the wrong side for it to open, but that's okay, his foster mom helps him out. Barney is estimated to be between 5-7 years old, but due to the neglect in his past, he has some health concerns. Barney has a heart murmur. He has been checked over by a vet a few times since being with our rescue, and his heart does not seem to be of concern at this time, but we want to make sure that any potential family is aware of this condition. Barney, being neglected for so long had developed a lot of teeth and gum issues as well. Our rescue recently had him in to have him put under anesthesia to be neutered as well as have all of his teeth thoroughly cleaned, so that health concern has been corrected. Due to the serve matting, Barney's back legs had to compensate for the large lumps of fur in between his back legs, now that all the matting is gone, he still has a cute little waddle to him, just to add more personality to him :) Lastly, due to not knowing his history, we do not know if Barney was ever properly potty trained. We have had him neutered recently and that has helped a lot with reducing his accidents in the foster home, but for now he does wear what we call a belly band in the house just to make sure all potty goes outside. Barney is a sweet guy and loves and craves human affection. He is a quiet guy and is very easy going. He does well with other dogs, cats and kids. He does have a lot of personality about him. Barney enjoys being around people, and loves kids. He has taken a fondness to his foster family's son. They hang out together all the time watching T.V and YouTube. Barney also enjoys his regular baths. He does well in the car, is crate trained, and is just a huge love bug.

About Ruff Start Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Who We Are & How We Do It

We are a small, but mighty, Non Profit 501c3 Rescue. We are a No-Kill dog and cat rescue organization in Central Minnesota. Our rescue is composed solely of volunteers who love animals. We rescue stray, neglected, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats and work very hard to place them in new loving homes.

This group is comprised ENTIRELY of volunteers who work full-time doing something that pays the mortgage. We do the rescue stuff (which is our true passion) after work and on the weekends. So if your phone calls or emails are not answered by a live person right away, it’s probably because we are at work and will call you as soon as we can!

By Choice

We do not have a shelter. We are of the belief that a home environment is far more desirable than a shelter or kennel. So, we rely exclusively on homes like yours in which to place our pets until they find their forever home!

We work exclusively with a foster-care program where our pet lives with you, and we pay for or provide everything. A home environment is always the most desirable and with the endless supply of animals needing homes, we just never have enough lined up. Sometimes the foster lasts a week, sometimes several months. A dog or cat will do far better adjusting when they are sitting by your chair or next to you while you are on the computer than stashed in a noisy kennel somewhere surrounded by sick and barking dogs.

We Can't Take Every Surrendered Pet
Because we don’t have a shelter, we can only take a new animal IF we have a vacant foster home for the pet to live while we seek a new forever home for him. OR, if you agree to hang onto the pet while we help them find a new home. Sadly, we are not able to assist every animal that crosses our path. There are just too many dogs & cats out there who need help. But, we DO have an extensive list of people looking for specific dogs and cats - so if you can hang onto your pet for a little longer, we might be able to assist you in placing them. No promises, but we promise to do our very best to help you find your pet their new forever home!

Come Meet Our Pets...

All of our animals are in foster homes. If you would like to meet a foster animal, please fill out an application on our website:! We also have our animals available at adoption events at local Petsmarts! (Monticello, Maple Grove, and Coon Rapids).

Our Adoption Process...

The adoption process we go through is to have the potential adopter fill out an application on our website: There is then a background check done on the potentional adopter and if they pass the background check and home visits we set up a home visit! If the home visit passes, the adopter can then adopt the animal they're looking at after meeting them.

There is an adoption fee. This fee depends on the vetting that the animal has already needed. If the animal is too young and has not yet been spayed or neutered, you are required to sign a contract and agree to have them spayed or neutered.
Adoption fees range from $200 - $300
