Poodle / Bichon Frise mix

LOCAL TO LITTLE ROCK, AR adoption ONLY!  NO exceptions!

Meet Hambone! Ham is a 1 year old poodle / bichon frise mix, weighing about 13 pounds. Before you read one more word and get excited because he is soooo cute… please STOP and read his entire biography. Hambone is an adorable, lovable, brilliant, little-boy-in-a-puppy-suit, and deeply loves his people, but he needs a special and patient home. He was found dumped in the woods in rural Arkansas. This poor baby had been badly abused, we believed hit and kicked. Ham had a very deep ear infection that had made him head defensive, so his owners likely tried to pet him on the head and it was painful, so he warned them, and then they hit him and the story goes… Ham’s ears are all better and are maintained by a weekly cleaning.

Hambone has been in his foster home for 7 months, where he was diagnosed by a doggie behaviorist as “reactive”. So, he is NOT aggressive, but if you run at him angry or he feels threatened you will see his grumpy side. Ham also has stranger anxiety, so he is an excellent watch dog. He is very motivated by treats though, and when introduced properly to a new person, he will be their buddy forever. He is quite possibly one of the most intelligent dogs we have ever known. Ham loves all of the people in his foster home, even teenagers, BIG TIME, so he must be special! He would do best in a home of a single person or couple who doesn’t have a lot of in and out visitors, or if they do, it is the same ones repeatedly (the stranger thing), and no small children. His home should also have gentle-natured souls that don’t yell a lot in anger, as this causes him much anxiety.

Ham is house trained with a doggie door and is really great about going outside, but if it is raining, you must take him out and make sure he goes. Ham has visited several homes in the past few months and had done amazing at meeting and greeting. He knows the command “leave it” and responds beautifully to reassurance after the dishwasher repairman has invaded his space. When you pick him up he hugs back and loves nothing more than being with his people and sleeping with them too. He is fine with other dogs, but is young, and likes to romp and play hard, so probably wouldn’t do well paired with a dog that doesn’t play, but would also be fine as an only dog. Hambone is not a fan of cats and barks at them mercilessly, though he has come to an agreement to stay away from the cat in his foster home, please NO CATS. Ham loves going in a car, boat, however he can be with his people and enjoys grilled steak, ice chips and iceberg lettuce. He likes to sleep with his people. His foster family has lovingly rehabbed him from his abuse, and we now believe he is ready to face a new world where not all people are bad. Hambone is a happy, precious, sweet boy that loves with his whole heart and he needs a home that will do the same for him. He is a soul dog. He is neutered, up to date, perfectly healthy and awesomesauce! Will consider homes in the central AR area only, within one hour of Little Rock, AR. Adoption fee $250.

About Helping Hands for Little Paws

About Our Rescue Group...

Helping Hands For Little Paws (HHLP) is a non-profit Foster care based group that rescues companion animals from local shelters and our streets. These animals have been abandoned, lost their homes or are facing a death sentence. We then place them in permanent homes where they will be loved and cared for.

Helping Hands began in 1995 and with the help of dedicated volunteers and public support we were able to rescue and place thousands of animals over the years. Our main goal is to educate Arkansans about spaying and neutering, as well as heartworm disease.

Come Meet Our Pets...

The best way to meet a pup is to complete an application first. Once we receive your application, then we will contact you to set up a meeting.

Our Adoption Process...

We have an application based adoption process. All our animals have been heartworm tested (dogs), FIV/Feleuk (cats), altered and given shots. If you are interested in adopting one of our animals, please fill out an online application at
