~~This beauty is Athena! She is a 3 ½ year old German Shepherd- Shiba Inu mix. Because of her unique mix she is on the smaller side weighing in at about 50lbs. Athena is such a sweet and mild manner girl who loves to spend time lounging around with her family or going on long walks, hikes, and runs. She is a very independent girl, but likes to be near her family, and when she wants your attention she will “grab” your arm or hand with her paw and give you a look with her big brown eyes that just says love me!
Athena is a smarty pants and knows how to Sit, Down, Stay, Shake, High five, Bed (she will go to your bed and lay down), Kennel (she will open the door of her crate and go in and lay down), and she has great leash manners. She has also done 2 weeks of professional obedience training. We are currently working on Leave it and Drop, but she is such a quick learner and picks up on commands quickly as long as there is a treat or two involved. She does great on car rides as long as she can roam around the back seat or has a bone to occupy her if confined. Athena is crate trained, and does well in her crate for a few hours, but has pretty bad separation anxiety (which she takes medication for) so does better if she can free roam if you are going to be gone for awhile. She is potty trained, but like everyone, can only hold it for so long. So to avoid any accidents we make sure to let her out before we leave anywhere.
Athena had a rough start to her life and was with an animal hoarder at one time. She has come a long way since then, but due to this she developed some territorial and aggression issues with other dogs over the last year. She doesn’t mind other dogs on walks, in fact she pretty much ignores them, but this means no dog parks, and she would do best in a home with no other pets. She is great with people, and loves when company comes to visit. She has limited experience with kids, but the few times she has been around kids (ages 3-11) she did great, and whenever we meet kids while out and about she is great with them. Because of her lack of experience with children we recommend a home with slightly older kids who can easily understand her boundaries (6+)
Overall Athena is such a great dog and has so much love she has to give, anyone will be lucky to add her to their home. So do you think Athena would be a good fit for your family??? If so, feel free to contact your adoption coordinator. Or if you’re in our adoption territory (NC, VA and MD), you can fill out an application here: www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. Athena is being fostered in Newport News, VA.
