Hi … my name is NEO and here are some things you should know about me:
Let me just say up front: please don't be scared of adopting me due to my age. I'm active, love taking walks, energetic in a very good way, but not hyper. I recently had a senior blood panel which showed I'm extremely healthy and very young for my age, and have a lot of time to devote to the perfect family. I recently had a dental and still have ALL my teeth and they're in great shape as well. My original owner took superb care of me until we parted this year. My vet says I have a lot of life left, probably several years, in me, so let's get together and chat about making me a permanent part of your life and family!!!! I need you and you need me!
Neo just needs a family to call his own and spend the remainder of his life being fed, cared for, safe and most of all loved.
Breed: Cairn Terrier
Approximate age/birthdate: Nov 2003
Up-to-date on routine vaccinations: YES
Heartworm Status: Negative and on monthly preventative
Crate trained: YES, but my Foster Mom never puts me in a crate, I have great house manners.
Fenced yard required: NO
Jump fences: NO
Leash walk: YES
Obedience training: Unknown
Rides well in vehicles: YES
Personality: Very laid back, still has a lot of spunk and energy at times. Neo still loves to play with toys, especially those that squeak. But he can be possessive of those toys when another dog is around. Would do best in a family that is retired, we feel due to his age he wouldn’t do well being left alone for long periods of time. He will bark if left outdoors too long or if he wants to go out or eat. He’s used to a daily routine and does best if you can keep him on that. Also apparently his previous owner never allowed him on the furniture, he never tries to jump on anything, but he does require a good thick dog bed. He sleeps on one at night in the bedroom, and another in the family room during the day. At night, he's so used to his own routine, he just gets up from the den and goes to bed in the bedroom. In the mornings, you don't hear him until you get up and let him know it's that time. Now that is a perfect pet.
Energy level: Low
Social with other dogs: Yes, but would do best as an only dog due to his age
Social with cats: NO WILL CHASE UNTIL HE’S OUT OF BREATH
Grooming: Please consider this if applying. This is a breed which needs regular brushing, bathing and grooming. Grooming would be needed about every 8-12 weeks.
Good with children: YES (foster family has 2 yr old grandson and they play constantly)
History: NEO was previously owned by one of our Military families. Unfortunately, they had to move and entrusted their neighbor to take care of him the rest of his life. Unbeknown to the owner the neighbor did not honor the owner's wishes and instead of contacting him, she allowed him to roam free and become flea infested. He developed an awful infection from the fleas and was picked up by Animal Control. After being returned and picked up several times she decided to surrender him tot he shelter, where our rescue came along to save him. When he came to rescue his matting was so severe in spots he had to be shaved down and the flea infestation caused him to pull his fur out. Now he's handsome, his coat has come back in well and he gets regular baths and loads of love.
Due to the skin condition we weren't sure what we were dealing with so we had our vet to run an extensive senior blood panel which showed absolutely nothing wrong. Just poor care for several months and probably poor food as well. He now eats grain free Natural Balance Duck & Potato, with a teaspoon of coconut oil on his food twice daily. His skin and coat are fantastic now.
Notice Neo's transformation from his photos. There is one here that's pretty graphic of his skin condition, what he looks like now and how he greets our neighbor each time she comes to visit. He gives hugs and his tail never stops wagging. One happy fella now.
