My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

Looking for a cuddle buddy? Loyal companion? Trail partner? Look no further, with the right training and patience, Sophie the Plott Hound is the perfect companion for anybody willing to give her the guidance and love she deserves! This is a super special dog and we aren’t just talking about her unique breed.

When we first met Sophie she was in a rural pound and was an unclaimed stray. Sophie is a 2 year old female brindle Plott Hound weighing approximately 48lbs of pure cuddles. A Plott hound is a type of Coonhound that has beautiful brindle colouring. She is not a common breed of dog, but that makes her even more special. Sophie was a bit timid at first, however is learning to accept love and is coming out of her shell more and more every day!

From first sight we observed how friendly Sophie was and how much she appreciated a good head and chest scratch. After only a couple hours with us, it was clear how loyal and affectionate of a dog she was with her calm demeanor and loveable personality. It was also clear that she had been kept as an outdoor dog, probably a hunting hound, as she had no concept of what living in a house was all about. But she adapted quickly to the luxuries of a home and boy does she love her luxuries now!!

When Sophie first came to us she did have some house breaking accidents as expected, however with consistency and proper correction she is learning that the house is not a bathroom! Sophie goes outside now to do her business and is praised for doing so. Sophie has been crate trained while in foster care at night and while we are away, and has quickly picked up the “to your crate” command and goes willingly as she aims to please her humans. When allowed, she loves to have sleepovers in our bedroom and has proven herself to have be obedient. Sophie quickly learned her name. When you call her there’s no doubt you’ll quickly see her ears flapping in the wind as she comes running!

Sophie has been known to offer us “gifts” as she brings our shoes and other items to us, however is quickly learning that these “gifts” aren’t necessary to receive love! She likes to take towels from the towel rack and bring them to you. She was caught trying to take the towel while her foster mom was in the shower. She was heading off to offer it as a gift to her foster dad! She is also very giving when it comes to letting out a loud toot here and there! She is not a girly girl or dainty at all!!! She makes us laugh all the time!

Sophie has never been obsessive or guarding of her food bowl or treats and is always willing to share with her humans. She is currently being fostered in a house with another large breed dog and is even willing to share her food and treats with him, although is not afraid to tell him to back off with a single bark if he over steps the line! She loves toy time and starting or stopping toy interaction has never been an issue as she appreciates any and all attention. Sophie would very much enjoy sharing a home with another playful, well- mannered dog. But if she were to be the only dog she would need to have regular interactions with dog friends to be happy.

Sophie definitely got the hound trait of being able to sniff out anything and follow the track of anything her nose wishes. That being said, she would best be suited in a house with a fenced in yard with no holes or means of escape as her nose may lead her elsewhere! Even the squirrels with the guts to enter our yard are sniffed out by Sophie the Plott Hound! Sophie has seen our neighbours through the gated fence in the back yard and greets them quietly, never charging at the fence or barking.

Sophie loves going for leashed walks around the neighbourhood and quietly acknowledging every passer-by. Sophie walks best on a gentle leader as she is still getting used to the household joy of being taken for walks. Sophie will need to attend obedience school with her new family to continue her learning and become the best family dog that she can be. She is a very smart girl and capable of learning anything taught her.

Sophie is not being fostered in a home with children however our extended family includes two young boys whom Sophie remained calm around and accepted the cuddles and hugs being offered by them. We have passed children and other dogs on our walks and she does not pay much attention to them as she is quickly mastering the walk nice command. Sophie also loves car rides and sits quietly in the back seat watching all that passes her by. Sophie would make a very nice family dog in a home with children old enough to be responsible and understand that gates and doors must be closed when coming and going. As Sophie is a hound she will wander off on the trail of a scent if given the chance.

Sophie does well meeting new adults and always greets with her soft big brown eyes and ends with her leaning on you as she receives pets and cuddles in. She also takes well to grooming and does not seem sensitive to any of her grooming needs.

Sophie’s biggest enjoyment comes from cuddles, fresh air and new adventures! She is such a loveable and cuddly pooch and needs to be in a home where she receives the love she deserves. Her calm and loyal demeanor is sure to win over every heart she encounters as she has ours!
