Hi there, I’m Ranger and if I haven’t stolen your heart with my photo then you need to hear that I’m a fun loving guy. Still a young 1 year old with lots of play and curiosity left for us to have many happy years and adventures together. I’m very treat motivated, so you can help me to learn my lessons quickly. I’ve been around cats and am very curious to the point that some of the humans around me think I shouldn’t have a kitty in my family. Maybe you have a kitty that’s dog savvy? I do get along with other dogs well, large and small. I’ve heard a lot of talk about what breed of dog I may be. I can tell you this for sure…I’m a one of kind, which may be part chocolate lab and plot hound mix. Yes, I know, you can see in my picture that I’m brown with brindle highlights, however my photographer would tell you that the photos don’t depict the beautiful rich brown as well as if you saw me in person. This leads me to the fact that I’ll be patiently waiting for my forever family to come for our meet and greet.

All New Leash on Life dogs are fully vetted, altered, heartworm tested, and micro chipped. After they’ve graduated from the New Leash on Life program they have 8 weeks of crate training, housebreaking, leash experience, with some obedience and agility work. About Pamlico Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)

About Our Rescue Group...

"Everyone deserves a second chance, whether they have two legs or four," is our motto.

In 2012, PAWS began a "New Leash on Life" (NLOL) dog rescue/training program, partnering with the Pamlico Correctional Institution in Bayboro, North Carolina.

The NLOL program takes rescued shelter dogs and pairs them with carefully selected inmate trainers for the betterment of both. Dogs become socialized, well-mannered canine good citizens, and inmates develop a sense of teamwork, responsibility, pride and accomplishment.

Every eight weeks these canine companions graduate and go home with their new adoptive families, and a new group of doggie students enter the program. You, too, can give a fur-ever home to one of these deserving dogs. Start today!

Come Meet Our Pets...

PAWS does not have a shelter; instead we arrange "meet and greets" with the dog/dogs you are interested in. At a quiet local park in Bayboro, you and your family will get an opportunity to meet and play with your potential new best friend/s.

Our Adoption Process...

Our "New Leash on Life" (NLOL) adoptions require a completed Terms of Adoption agreement, Adoption Application and a home visit. The $175 adoption fee is due only when you receive your dog.

The fee includes testing for parasites, vaccinating against distemper, parvo, rabies and bordetella; de-worming, heartworm/flea/tick prevention medications, and altering.

Adoption can begin with a call or email to PAWS. After discussing your needs with a PAWS volunteer, complete and return the forms found on our website,

Applications are collected, "meet and greets" are arranged, and if it's a good match, home visits scheduled. If you live out of the area, we partner with other rescue groups willing to visit you at home.

If selected to adopt the dog who captures your heart, you can attend your dog's graduation ceremony at the prison and take home a wonderful, well-trained and loving, lifelong companion.
