My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

For more information and adoption applications please consult our website at www.pounddog.ca.

This super sweet puppy is DeWalt, or as we affectionately call him, Dewey. Dewey is an 11 week old mostly Amercian Bulldog with some Boxer mixed in. We can’t say his exact full grown size but it’s safe to say he will be 70lbs plus and could reach 90lbs by the time he is done filling out. Anyone interested in Dewey needs to be prepared for a very big dog. He is a very good natured pup, with a great temperament and fun loving personality, but he does have his stubborn side as well, which is a Bullie trait. We are committed to ensuring Dewey finds a great home with responsible people who will never abandon this beautiful dog and will ensure that he gets all the training and socialization that a big puppy needs to be a well behaved even bigger dog!

Like every dog, Am Bulldogs need early socialization and exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences when they're young. Socialization helps ensure that your puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Dewey is getting a lot of socialization in his foster home; his adoptive family will need to continue to socialize him. He adores his foster sister dog and is being socialized with appropriate other dogs to ensure he has positive associations. He just needs to meet more dogs in positive situations to become more comfortable. It’s all about socialization and positive exposures at this age. His waking hours are focused on his beloved play time. His favourite toys when he’s playing on his own are his bed and dog dish. He carries his dish around and buries his head in his bed while talking up a storm. He loves to take toys under the sofa or chairs. There’s nothing quite like watching his white bum and tail with brown patch gradually disappear under the sofa. A minute later, his head will reappear, looking around for something new to chew. You will then find yourself crawling on the ground trying to retrieve the toy he left under the sofa. While you’re doing that, he will probably be chewing your pant leg or slipper while you’re most vulnerable. Life with Dewey requires good knees and legs, and lots of patience, but the rewards come in gales of laughter at his crazy antics.

He needs to be constantly supervised as anything around the home is considered a chew toy, including you. It is recommended that you have lots of chew toys available for him to ensure his safety, and spare your house and furniture from repairs. Anyone interested in Dewey will need to ensure that their schedule suits having a puppy. He cannot be crated for an 8hr work day as he will need to be let out to pee midday. He is good overnight if he gets adequate play, but during the day someone will need to be around to let him out every 4hrs or so at this point. Yes, he will need to be crated when you’re not around – he chews and can get into trouble when unattended.

This breed mix is very smart and is typically easy to train, and Dewey is both. He tends to pick things up within a day or two. Dewey still has accidents but is learning fast and with proper supervision, you will learn his signs that he has to go and be able to get him out. When he needs to have a bowel movement, he barks, and goes to the door when you ask if he wants to go out. He urinates on command when he’s outside, but, he sometimes forgets that he’s not supposed to urinate in the house when he’s been playing hard. We praise and reward him every time he does his business outside. He looks up at you with pride at doing what you’ve asked. He loves to please.

Dewey is willing to try new things, even though new situations are a bit scary. Dewey has gotten much better at going for walks. We’re not sure if the leash represents going for a walk or is just a tug toy to him. He gets very excited when we eventually put it on. Putting on your shoes is a bit of a challenge – they need to be chewed while you are tying your laces. His foster sister’s leash is another tug toy. Basically, going for a walk is a very exciting time in his life. Once he’s out of the house, everything is an adventure with all kinds of things to sniff or play with or chew. He still wanders on leash, but with training and time he will be a great walking companion. He’s not as confident on his walks at night though. You have to encourage him to continue on the walk at times, especially if he hears something strange or sees something he’s not sure about, but when it’s time to head home, he wants to hurry home. He’s gotten much better in the short period of time he has been in our home. He responds well to a little tug on the leash, a verbal reminder for correction, and a treat or even a little distraction like tossing a pine cone or a leaf. He is such a puppy.

When he’s not sleeping (and snoring), Dewey is thinking about chewing, looking for something to chew, or chewing something. You have to be aware of what he’s doing all the time. He’s not selective about what he chews – your pants, electrical wires, furniture, the floor, the wall, dirt ..., yes dirt, sticks, foliage, his foster sister’s leg. You will need to puppy proof your home. If you have a dog in your home, it will have to be very tolerant of Dewey’s love of rough play. He likes to chase, wrestle, play tugs. He is very verbal when he plays as is a Bullie trait. There’s lots of growling and barking, not to mention biting, and chasing or being chased, all in good fun. He is always looking for his foster sister to play, so if you have a dog, it’s not just you that will have to live with Dewey, it’s your furry friend. Be kind to your dog (or cat, or bunny, or whatever) and don’t think that it will get used to Dewey with time. Dewey will expect your dog to play and will pester it when he’s awake. If your dog isn’t ready for this level of activity or isn’t interested in other dogs, Dewey isn’t the dog for your home. You will also have to engage Dewey in play time yourself when your dog needs a break from him. The good thing about puppies is that they can only play so long and then they crash and adorable puppy naps happen.

Dewey will need continued training as he grows and matures. Because he is going to be a very large dog, we are looking for a family committed to taking him to obedience school and train him very well. We are looking for a family that will ensure he will go to advanced levels of dog training school; basic obedience will not be enough for a powerfully built, intelligent dog. We expect that his adoptive family will continue his training past basic level and will ensure that he is a great example of good dog behaviour when out in public. There is nothing more impressive than a huge dog being walked under control and greeting people appropriately. We want only the best for Dewey. If you cannot commit to putting the time in to train Dewey to an advanced level and attend a reputable dog school to do so, then this won’t be the dog for you.

Dewey is fully crate trained! He will even walk into his crate on his own for you with a treat. During the day if we are out, he is crated to ensure his safety and keep him from destroying parts of your home while you are away. He does bark when he’s first put into his crate. He wants to be with you, where the action is, but don’t give in. He settles quickly for a good rest.

Dewey LOVES his meal times! He still jumps up and down before I place his food bowl on the floor. He has to be reminded to sit. He inhales his food. He needs a special bowl to slow him down while he eats. We have to store his food in a secure place; otherwise, he would be into the bag, helping himself. If given the chance, he would steal his foster sister’s food. He is VERY food motivated, which makes training with treats easy. Even though Dewey is a puppy, there are rules and expectations in his foster home. We don’t allow him to get away with any behaviour that we wouldn’t allow a big dog to do. We are training him our expectations right from the start so that he grows up knowing right from wrong.

As Dewey will be a very large and powerful boy when full grown, we don’t recommend him for families with very small children. We are looking for a home for him with kids over 12yrs of age. We suggest that you do your research on his breed mix, American Bulldog’s in particular. He will be a very athletic and muscular, powerful and majestic dog. American Bulldogs are more active than a typical Bulldog so he will need an active family who will ensure he is properly exercised. As he grows, his exercise requirements will grow with him. As a full grown dog he will need daily long walks, hikes, even runs (when fully grown) to ensure he is a happy dog. He is not a suitable dog for an apartment or small condo setting. Dewey needs a large fenced yard to run around in and play.

Dewey is good with other dogs and ideally we are looking for a home for Dewey that has another playful, energetic dog that can be a mentor of good behaviour to him as well as a best friend. Dewey plays rough so his dog friends will need to be sturdy and enjoy wrestle play. Keeping in mind, if he doesn’t have another dog to play with in the home, he will expect his people to be his daily playmates. He will remind you that he wants and needs to play. It will be up to you to ensure that he is fully exercised and tired out so he is a happy, fulfilled pup and you are happy, fulfilled Dewey people.

Dewey is a blank slate for the perfect family to mold and train and help him grow into a wonderful, happy big boy. We are looking for people for Dewey that have prior Bullie or other powerful breed experience as he will try and challenge the leadership in the home as he matures into his teenage stage. We need to ensure he goes to a family that can handle this and give him proper correction when needed and a whole lot of praise when he’s making good choices. He is going to be a cuddle bug and big suck. He will be extremely loyal, loving, and devoted to his family, and he is looking for that love and devotion back. Big dog lovers, this may just be the puppy for you! Puppies aren’t for everyone. They take a lot of your time and are a LOT of work. But if you have a big yard, a schedule to suit a puppy, and are willing to put the time and effort in to train and socialize him extremely well, then this gem of a puppy may be the perfect fit.
