Dinah's Story...
Dinah is a long haired black and auburn dachshund mix with amber eyes and a jaunty plumed tail that waves like a flag as she trots alongside the friends who walk her every day. We pulled Dinah from a dangerously full Animal Control in September with her companion/sister Dora. She quickly lost her cuddlemate to a wonderful adoptive family shortly after their arrival. Dinah tries to be brave as she waits alone for someone to notice the hopeful look in her eyes that greets each visitor. Dinah is 6 1/2 months old as of Oct 10. She is quite portable and fits perfectly into a lap with no spillage. Her adoption fee is $100.

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a "No kill" shelter which provides quality care, spay/neuter-all vaccines-deworming-vet exam-standard disease testing and for dogs-monthly prevention heart worm treatment. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquishments. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open. Adoption hours are Tues-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4. Contact or visit CSHS, 4823 Helen Hwy. 75N, Sautee, GA 30571, 706-865-4135. The shelter is located 3 miles south of the alpine town of Helen in the NE mountains.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Dinah, a Sautee Dachshund dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Dachshund for sale in Sautee, or seeking a Dachshund dog from a breeder in Sautee.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Sautee already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Sautee breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Dachshund breeders who help with Dachshund rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Sautee paves the way for another one to be saved.
