  • ID#: 217362

Khaleesi is a special girl, who needs a special home. She and 8 dogs were living in a car. Khaleesi really doesn't know what to make of the shelter. She knows she doesn't like other cats and finds the sounds of the shelter scary. She wants be to friends with people and can be quite affectionate. She needs lots of time to warm up and feel comfortable in new situations. Like with most shy cats, you will need to wait for Khaleesi to make make the first move to initiate friendship, but once Khaleesi feels safe, she will ask for attention by rubbing against you. Khaleesi will do best in a quiet adult home with an experienced guardian who understands that patience and plenty of TLC is the key to helping shy cats become comfortable in new surroundings.

Begin by giving Khaleesi a small private room, like a bathroom, outfitted with everything that she will need for the first few weeks--litterbox, bed, food, water and toys. Make sure Khaleesi has a hiding box or a bed with high sides so that she can feel safe and secure. Spend lots of time together, enticing Khaleesi to play with a toy or two, and talking quietly while you snuggle and cuddle with each other. When Khaleesi happily greets you at the door of her room, it will be time to allow her brief explorations beyond the safety of this private space, carefully supervised of course. Make sure Khaleesi can always get back to her safe room and her litterbox. She will also probably find new spots to hide in other rooms, but will still need access to her safe room.

In time, Khaleesi will feel secure in your home and become a devoted and affectionate companion. Please do understand that a shy cat may always need a safe place to hide from time to time, especially when strangers come to visit.
