If you look up "cute" on Wikipedia you'll find a picture of Dexter. Okay, maybe not Wikipedia, but he's an adorable find on the MHS website for sure! Dexter is also "cute" when it comes to personality. A guy who seems to have had a few hard knocks, Dexter is a bounce-back fellow who, given some comfort levels with a loving human and some confidence will prove himself to be a charming, affectionate fellow who likes to play with plushy squeaky toys and other small dogs.

It was not always so for dear Dexter. When he first arrived here he let us know right away he didn't like to be handled in "intimate ways." Good info for his new vet. As he's settled in he probably still doesn't want his temperature taken, but he's been very accepting of all the affection sent his way.

The best way to help Dexter find security and confidence is training. He'll be a star in his Family Dog class, whichever version you choose. Some things Dexter can work on besides the basics include trading his high value chew toy or treat (he REALLY likes them) and general sociability around other dogs. He's been playing very nicely with other small dogs here at MHS, and he could probably get along with bigger dogs if he's properly introduced. A consult before adoption will give you the tools you need to introduce Dexter to your lifestyle and the world in general. Every adoption comes with a free behavior consultation with one of our specialists, so be sure to take advantage.

Dexter is the perfect example of a dog who, for whatever reason, gave us a little grief in the beginning, but has blossomed into exactly what he looks like: a cute, smart, affectionate little guy. He's a lucky boy to have landed in a place where time and patience make all the difference. And you're lucky to have found him!
