This absolutely gorgeous girl is Ruthie!
Ruthie's new to SOS, but the more we learn about her, the more we love her! Her breed mix is a mystery, but she appears to be a Shepherd mix about one to one and a half years old and weighing 34.7 pounds - a great size - not too big, not too little, just right! She is doing well with her house training - she's left loose with access to a few rooms in the house when her foster parents are at work and has only had a few accidents. She walks well with an Easy Walk Harness and leash. She has only been crated in the car down south so will probably need crate training. Her foster "buckle" her in in the backseat with a travel harness that clips into the seat belt and she does fine - still a little unsure of car rides, but liking them more and more. High value treats are invaluable! She is capable of climbing or jumping a 6-ft. fence and will try to get out, but it would appear she only does this to get to people. She dearly LOVES people and is eager to meet them during her walks! She's very curious and inquisitive watching people do their thing in the neighborhood as she walks along, and it seems she waits for the invitation to go over to meet them. She's quite playful and can be goofy at times. She loves to play with her toys and entertains herself with tossing them, shaking them about and pouncing on them - her typical high energy period is 6-8pm after dinner. She's okay with some other dogs, so introductions are a must, and she does seem a bit nervous with dogs larger than she is, and can be reactive with other dogs - a good hold on the leash is imperative. It may be best if she were an only dog. She's good with kids and is very gentle when approaching them. As for kitty cats, she would love to chase them, but stops dead in her tracks and checks them out in her alert stance. With prompting, she will "leave it" and carry on with her walk. Squirrels and rabbits are a different story and she's very quick to spot them, so again a good hold on the leash is imperative. As with all our dogs, we strongly recommend obedience classes as it not only provides an opportunity for learning commands and socialization, but helps to promote that ever-important bond between the dog and her human family. Ruthie is as sweet as they come! She was picked up as a stray and then adopted out to an older man last May, but he found her to bee too active for him. His grandchildren loved her and were quite upset when he returned her. Ruthie would be a wonderful dog for a single person or a retired couple who could give her lots of attention and love. She may do best with someone who is around much of the time. She's desperate to be with people and she is a very loving and sweet dog!

Since arriving in New England, Ruthie has loved rustling through the fallen leaves and watches in amazement as they fall from the trees. She "jumps for joy" to see her human come home from work at the end of the day and even upon waking up in the morning. In her excitement she almost jumps up with all four paws off the floor while moving backwards as your enter the room! She's just so darn cute and it's funny to see this "live." She's been taste testing local apples (she prefers Fuji) and occasionally she'll take a teaspoon of coconut oil - carrot snacks are a no-go so far. She definitely benefits from several good walks a day. Currently she gets a vigorous one early in the morning, a quick walk at lunchtime, another vigorous walk after her foster Mom gets home from work, followed by one or two quick walks later in the evening. A fenced yard would be ideal for her since she LOVES to run - a quick jog on her vigorous walks helps with this.

So if Ruthie seems like she might just be the sweet dog you've been looking for, don't wait. Just go ahead and fill out an application for her. Ruthie will help remind you how amazing this world is!

**Additional info you should know -  For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix.  We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label.   Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption.  There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

Our Adoption Process...

Step 1: Find Fido

Review our online dog bios, email us if you have any questions. At SOS, we want to make the RIGHT right match, and that means helping you and Fido start a relationship – sometimes from a long distance.

Take your time, explore your options, consider your home and what kind of companion will fit in your lifestyle.

Step 2: Complete Our Application http://sosarl.org/aa/

Once you think you have found the right dog for you, please complete our online application.

At SOS, we don’t just want to make a match, we want to make the right match. To do this, we need your help; we know our dogs, but we don’t know you yet – our application helps us get to know you!

Step 3: Have a Talk

We will review the application and if it appears to be a good match for the selected dog, we will arrange for a time to talk with you over the phone.

Step 4: Meet Your Match

If, after the phone interview, the match seems to be a good one, we will be happy to arrange a meet-n-greet with you and the dog, if the dog is local. Meet-n-greets will be scheduled in the order they are requested.

Step 5: Application Screening

Once everyone has met (if the dog is local), and the match seems to be a good one, a designated SOS volunteer will check your landlord, vet, and personal references, as relevant. We may also require a home visit or adopter meeting.

Step 6: Finalize The Adoption

If the match is a good one, you will be informed via email of the adoption decision, and provided with instructions for how to pay the adoption donation and complete our adoption contract/addendum(s).

Step 7: Pick Up Your New Best Friend!

Once the adoption is finalized, congratulations! We will contact you to make arrangements to pick up your new family member!
**Please note that additional vetting, quarantine and/or waiting periods may be required depending upon your state of residence.

All of our dogs are age appropriately vaccinated prior to adoption. All of our dogs have been spayed/neutered and tested/treated for common canine disease.
