“Deuce” The Goose
We were first introduced to Deuce on August, 12th when he was brought in for euthanasia due to behavior and aggression issues. As veterinary professionals we are aware that sometimes the most responsible option in these cases can be euthanasia due to the liability of an aggressive dog. However; when it came time to give the injection there was something about him that made us hesitate. In the few minutes that we had interacted with him there were no signs of aggression – in fact he seemed very happy and sweet, just a little hyper! It was decided that Dr. Becky Logue would call the owner and see if she would surrender Deuce to TLC. The owner was brought to tears of gratitude and gladly surrendered Deuce, stating that he was a good dog but he needed more than she was able to give him and since she had not had any success finding him a new home, felt she was out of options.
The following afternoon Deuce passed his Behavior Evaluation with Haley from Fetch K9! She informed us that Deuce showed no behavior issues that would warrant euthanasia. What she did see was a very energetic dog that would require a proper outlet for his excitement. Haley felt very confident that with the right owner, obedience training, and time/space to exert all his energy, Deuce would be a wonderful pet!
A few short days later, Deuce was neutered, vaccinated, tested negative for Heartworm, and dewormed. He then went to stay with Haley so she could begin his obedience training and we started to look for his new home. Deuce is doing so well with his obedience and has shown tremendous improvement in basic “doggie manners”! He is eager to please and responds well to corrections and structure. He will need an experienced dog owner who will have time to work with him and continue his training. He needs a cat free home and will do best as an only dog or with a non-dominant, calm dog as a housemate.
