Tota was really scared for a while after arriving at our shelter. This is not uncommon with dogs who have spent their whole lives in one home. But sometimes people cannot keep their dogs, and they come to us. We give them time to acclimate, with special Pet Pals helping them to know they are safe and we will be kind. This worked for Tota! Hooray!!

A quieter home will be best for Tota, as long as she gets her nice walks every day. She still can have a sensitive reaction to new experiences, environments and people. Give her time. It is best to let her choose to approach people rather than letting them adore her quickly. This isn't so easy, who wouldn't want to reach out to her? Too bad many dogs take this as a threat when a hand or face comes at them. Larger people, especially men, seem more scary to her. Because of this, she should live in a home where the people are mature and will read her body language. Many small dogs prefer to be picked up with a verbal cue such as "up", a physical cue such as touching them lightly under their chest where you will be picking them up, and often from a position of backing up to you.

Picky about her dog friends, she may prefer to be an only dog, or there might be some dogs she will bond with. Let us help you make a match if you already have a dog and are interested in taking her home. She could be the Tota to your Toto.

All in all Tota is a total love when she is relaxed. We think she might take to playing with toys if you get her interested. She deserves to go to classes to learn the basics and for you to bond together. No, she is not too old. She is an adult, maybe middle aged, but her brain is great. Her confidence will go right up when she learns about ways you and she can communicate. Scenting classes are a really big boost to dogs, too.

If you are dog savvy and understand how little dogs can have some worries about being handled (no wonder, giants lift them right into the air without warning and they often have to dangle there a while before knowing they are safe), Tota might be yours.
